The 13-year-old Christiane F. lives together with her mother and sister in a dreary high-rise settlement in Berlin-Gropiusstadt. To at least temporarily escape family problems, she smokes hash and throws trips. But then she switches to hard drugs and takes heroin. She's getting addicted. In the morning she goes to school and in the afternoon on the children's stroke at the Zoo station to raise the money for her addiction. Christiane gets into the suction of drugs and prostitution. And instead of the supposed freedom, the fabric brings only decay and death, which does not spare even some of their closest friends. Bonus material: Audio commentary with director Uli Edel; interview with Natja Brunckhorst; casting insights Review: Great quality blu ray release - Beautiful print on blu ray. Although in original german language format, it's easy enough to select English subtitles. Not sure on the extras however as have not tried that yet. I first saw this on video in the early 80's and it still holds up today and is a great film just as Breaking glass on blu ray is. Review: Christian's F. - I first saw this film at the cinema on its release in the early 1980s and subsequently bought the VHS version. The sound and picture quality of this release is excellent. The film should be obligatory viewing for all secondary school children aged over 11! Outstanding!

A reality that still true today.
I did buy this movie on Blu Ray to update/replace my old DVD for a version with a much better visual quality. Sound is also better than the DVD since it was upgraded to DTS-HD. I do not have a 4K player yet, so I can't comment on the 4K ultra-HD/HDR quality, but I would assume it is better than a 1080 Blu Ray. I did read the book before seen the movie (when it played on the Theaters) and I think it is very well done. I also think the actors did a great job overall. The movie is raw and do not shy away of portraying the reality of becoming an addict at early age as it is (mostly unpleasant), as you might expect watching a movie about addiction that was not made in Hollywood. Being based on actual facts from the late 1970's, we might ponder why the root causes are still the same now in 2022. Soundtrack is killer with David Bowie songs and few versions he made just for the movie (OST CD available from Virgin Records; 1981/2001 724353309329). Highly recommended for teenagers 13 and up (under parent advise), but be aware it may upset/shock some viewers.

Fantastic upgrade that's worth importing
Previously imported the Spanish edition on blu-ray that said video was full hd despite it looking identical to the legal streams that were on Pluto TV, Plex, BFiPlayer(fullHD) & Arte that were all 720P. Even though this isn't HDR images are Sharp and crisp with nice detail. Like that you select between the original mono track and newer master, just wish there were more extras . Currently this is the best version of the film whether in 4k or standard hd and it includes English subtitles.

Stark but brilliant, an essential film for cinephiles
Glad I finally saw this, one of the foremost cult movies. Was alerted to it via the David Bowie route (he appears in concert in the movie, although the actual crowd scenes were from an AC/DC concert), and contributes a number of his great tracks from Heroes, Low and Station to Station. Flits from almost verite/documentary style to more traditional narrative. The behind the scenes story is just as fascinating. A stark, yet beautiful film about the life of a young junkie in Berlin in the 70s. Can't urge people enough to watch this. Definitely a must for cinephiles.
