42 regular would be my recommendation.

I honestly can't say, because he (the boyfriend who I got them for) does not put the shorts in the dryer, he hangs them on a clothesline, and they don't get frequent washes as he uses them as dress shorts. I think they'd be fine if they are washed on gentle, and if put in the dryer, don't put them on high (maybe tumble dry).
