I enjoyed it very much, but you really pay a premium to have it. They used to be available in the supermarket, but no longer. It's a shame because these things are very, very good. They make an excellent snack. Review: Delicious herring - Traditionally Ukrainian people include herring in Christmas Eve dinner. This brand, though expensive is the best representation of my childhood holidays. I am an octogenarian.

Delayed shipping, spoiled product
The product is supposed to be refrigerated. It wass order on July 23 and arrived today (August 14) Although the packing looked good, the product was warm. I am sure it is spoiled and will not risk eating it. I would still like to receive this product. Could a new package be sent overnight mail?

What you need to know
My experience with Matjes herring fillets. Matjes herring is EXTREMELY salty in a sweet tasting brine. The brine looks fatty. The fat is from the herring and is very healthy. The healthiest of all the fish. The jar is vacuum sealed, quite difficult to open, and will "pop" as you break the vacuum seal. That, along with the amount of salt, makes this product practically impossible to go bad as long as the vacuum seal is intact, despite receiving it at a warm temperature. Once opened, it must be refrigerated. To cut the saltiness, a good way to eat Matjes herring is on a fresh sliced plain bagel with cream cheese and topped with a nice slice of Beefsteak tomato. Cucumber slices can be substituted for tomato. The saltiness will be dramatically reduced Enjoy !!!

Why it's not in the. supermarkets anymore.
I love the herring but the price is very steep. I bought it many times within the past and it used to be 6.99. But the stores don't sell it anymore. I always got it at Whole Foods.

Great taste
The Matje herring, sill, has been my favorite since growing up in Sweden, always had some at breakfast or lunch on hard bread. Although they are expensive since imported. Will buy again.

The product is unsafe to eat.
This product is supposed to be kept cold, and it arrived with no ice and warm. I don't think is is safe to consume.
