Beautiful colorful insightful book!

It was alright. Not a riveting read though.

This is so gorgeous.It shows 100 different styles from different decades and all over the world to show cultural and social influences. What it also show's is how people have been brave, and despite society telling you that you cannot be a certain way, you can and should stand out from the crowd and be completely and utterly individual and yourself.It is square and around 2 inches thick and is sitting happily on my coffee table, everyone that comes in has a look through it and says how interesting it is. The pages are thick and glossy with lots of stunning pictures. There are even explanations about each style.I think this would be a great book for fashion students or anyone interested in fashion, but for me primarily if you know of a young person of either gender who is currently experiencing bullying for being different this is a great book to show them. I got this for my niece because she is currently being very badly bullied in school about her hair, her clothes, and my brother recently bought her a new iphone and she was so proud of it and was showing her friends, and the mean girls at school smacked it out of her hands and stamped on it on the floor smashing it to pieces. I wanted to show her that individuality should be not only encouraged but celebrated. Who wants to be a sheep, never follow the crowd, stand out, be yourself, never let anyone put you down. This is what this book portrays.

This is a book which should appeal to those interested in fashion from the street up, and how the two way process of street influence on designers, and then the industry influencing those who will only buy on-trend, works.I must admit that it is the diversity of human creative expression, and its rebellious, anti establishment individuality which most delights in this book. By the time cap-it-all ism has sucked out the ‘up yours’ gestures street sometimes makes, sanitised and commodity-ised it and sold it back to those who then buy it as a must-have, it becomes less interesting and formulaic.Even if someone has no interest in fashion per se, this is a great browsy coffee table book (rather than cover to cover read) for those who love looking at photographs of ordinary people, from all over the world, expressing their culture and individuality, a celebration of individual beauty.Inevitably, it is a focus on urban, and, personally, I would have liked to have seen much less attention placed on the States (a good third of the book) and Europe, and more on street fashion from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and AsiaThe accompanying text, something of a dissertation on the influence of pop, film, and politics on fashion, is also of interest

This weighty, substantial, 9"x 9 1/2" square and 1 1/2" thick, beautifully produced volume, is a certain coffee table hit. Everyone here that picks it up becomes fascinated by the photos and stories - it has a very wide appeal. The textured cover with the gold letters, and taste of the unconventional photography subjects inside; the hundreds of glorious glossy photos, keeps you intrigued all the way through. I will add that children are excited and thrilled by the off the wall, extraordinary, pictures and informative text beside. The UK is well represented by Goth (Whitby of course), Northern Soul, Manchester, Casual, Baggy, London, Teddy Boy, Chap, Hipster, Advanced Style, Grime, Essex Girl, New Age Traveller...My favourite is the African guy sporting a waistcoat made out of teddy bears - de stuffed. What fun. The Black Metal section could give you night mares. The Brony Unicorns are delightful. Anything goes!Many countries, continents of the world are represented; this is an encyclopaedia of street fashion and style. Gorgeous, scary, outrageous, always original and fabulous. Dressing up, dressing down, cosplay, fetish and festival wear, it will keep you entertained and educated for hours.

Generously illustrated and well presented, this 400 page book covers 100 different street styles from all around the world. It makes a lovely gift to someone interested in fashion or social anthropology but with only a few pages on each style, it is equally suitable for keeping on a coffee table for leisurely browsing. Images are accompanied by thoroughly researched articles about each style in the book. Although the pictures are fantastic, it is really the text that sets the book apart, providing that extra layer of insight that pictures cannot offer.Some styles are obscure and completely unheard of to me; for others I was familiar with the ‘lable’ but didn’t know what it actually meant in terms of clothing (did you know how a 'flogger' or a "ragga" styles themselves?).As with all books – this compilation is a selection and not a comprehensive guide so naturally there are movements and countries that are not represented. So if you are into a particular movement or style then go for something else.
