The Secret of the Golden Flower: A Chinese Book of Life

Great book.

This book originally came out in 1929 in German, with a foreword by Carl Gustav Jung, the famous founder of analytical psychology. The book was of utmost importance to Jung, because he had struggled for years with material coming from his unconscious, and we know now as the "Red Book". When Richard Wilhelm sent him the manuscript, he realized the similarities in the "secret of the golden flower" with his own psychic experiences. For Jung, this book was the proof that what he had written down in a "altered" state of active imagination in the "Red Book" was not rubbish, but belonged to the archetypal images of mankind. This book was the "missing link", the parallel he was looking for, and sent him out to discover first eastern and thereafter western alchemy. The book enabled him to put the pictures that came out from his unconscious into perspective. Jung thereafter championed the "individuation process", a psychic growth process whereby each of us should become the person he/she was intended to be. He developed fascinating parallels between the psychic processes the old alchemists went through and today's need for an "individuation process". And all this thanks to this book of Richard Wilhelm!
