Q: Does the Grit Guard sit flatly on the bottom of the Adam's bucket, or does it get wedged-in about 2/3s of the way down?

Earls, The x shaped portion on the grit guard provides about an inch or two between the grit guard and bottom of bucket, allowing dirt plenty of room to build up. This ensures you do not get any dirt on your rags and etc you are dipping in the container. I bought two of the buckets myself, I highly recommmend this product.

Q: What is the diameter of the bottom and top of the bucket?

As stated by others, it is a standard 5 gallon bucket top dimension of 11-1/4” so you can get a standard Gamma 2 Lid for it. The bottom dimension of these are 10”.
