Good Info
Pros: The book has a ton of great info about the culture and history of Ukraine. You will learn a lot even if you're familiar with the basics already. Cons: The book sometimes reads like a translation from another language. Occasionally it's hard to understand the meaning because of this. On the bright side, it feels like a translation from Ukrainian, so that's fun. It's also sometimes more like a list than a book--there doesn't seem to be a narrative throughline. Overall, if you're curious about Ukraine because of current events or something else, this is an accessible, convenient source of a lot of information. Much easier to read than a history textbook!

Very educational
You get to look at Ukraine culture. I learning the color of the flag, food, dance, and more. There is a lot of information in this book, and a very educational read. I personally love to read about different cultures. Definitely recommend!

Horribly written or translated, & full of factual errors, beginning on the first page
This book is horribly written. It falsely claims on the first page that the Zaporizhian Sich was the first democracy in Europe, rather than the much older classical Athens. The Zaporizhian Sich didn’t even exist before the time when the Parliament of England and the parlements of France — the latter being law courts more than legislative bodies — were originally formed. This lie, or surpassingly ignorant statement (it must be one or the other), is seemingly representative of the book’s overall quality: it’s full of badly written, badly sourced nationalist myths, and many wild errors of judgment.

I appreciate what the author was going for with this book, but it was not what I was expecting. Yes, there are some interesting stories, and random facts about Ukraine, but most of the entries tend to drift from the intended focus. I was expecting more from something calling itself the Great Book of Ukraine. The biggest issue I have with this book is that it is very obvious that the author had no one to proof read or, for that matter, edit the material. It is understandable that English isn't the author's first language, and I have no problem with that, but there are many grammatical and formatting mistakes throughout the book that I found myself correcting when I should have just focused on the information being presented. These mistakes and the wandering of the information that is presented did not make the reading of this short book enjoyable, but I did learn a couple of interesting facts that I was able research more about on my own.

This book, as others have noted, often reads like a not very good translation - as, in fact, do some of the reviews (despite the apparently English names of the reviewers). But it is a good book to buy for anyone interested in learning a little more about the brave, inspiring Ukrainian nation, its history and culture. It's a quick, pleasant read, with plenty of intriguing details. Odd, but worth buying.
