These are really brilliant......Great value... Great quality.....works well
Further update after using the gate for 12 months.............. still really impressed..... in fact more so. My 3 yearold grandson has taken to swinging on the gate when I'm not looking!! Still works perfectly and nothing broke. All the bolts/hinges have stayed in adjustment. I'm pretty sure anyone that has problems with the gate has not installed it correctly..... the hinges have to be spot-on position wise..... don't let the hinges on the gate "twist" when you tighten them up or the gate will be difficult to lift with one hand............. Don't fit it directly to a wall/plaster.... fit a wooden batten first and then attach the hinges to that... it's much more robust and easier to do + you can get round the "problem" of the skirtingboard. . I've been so impressed with these after fitting 2 in my house, I then fitted another 4 in my son's house. Fitted one at the bottom of the stairs.................. fitted a 2" batten on the wall side to narrow the gap sufficiently so it would fit.............. the batten also made it a lot easier to fit the screws as I was only going into wood. When you open the fittings pack, be careful with the "piece" that locks/unlocks the gate....... if you press it when it's not mounted, it comes apart and you can easily lose the small plastic "plate" and spring..... in fact in my box, it had already come apart and I was wondering where this spring and plate had come from. Its a bit fiddly to fit so don't rush it............... I'm pretty good with DIY and with fixing/painting the batten, a good couple of hours. works beautifully... feels pretty sturdy.......... easy to open for adults but difficult for toddlers. Template works well for the hinge side............ make sure they're positioned correctly and there won't be any problems that some people seem to have experienced with it lifting off the hinges. I didn't bother with the template for the other side........... just swing the gate across to the "closed" position.............. then position the top/bottom supports so they sit correctly in the gate supports, mark their exact position and screw them in place. I have read of people just using the template and the gate has been slightly twisted so they then had to reposition and redrill all the holes. All in all, a great product. One "tip".......... when you tighten the top hinge lcokingnut, best to lock the threaded section with a set of molegrips etc to stop it twisting...... if it twists slightly, it makes it much more difficult to lift the gate. One final thing............... there's a small white plastic "peg" that you fit into one of two small holes in the locking mechanism "plate"......... it's there so the gate hits a "stop" when closing and doesn't keep swinging passed the catch. These pins are VERY easy to lose and drop so take care........... they're not essential if you lose it but useful.

Ideal, once in place
I like it but then I didn’t have to fit it!! My husband, who’s Ikea-tastic as in good with an Allen key & at following tricksy instructions, last fitted a stair-gate about 10yrs ago & he struggled with this. Ordinarily, I’d have let him choose the gate but we’d argued for some months over having one as it’s for my chihuahua (which was one of my executive decisions LAST year). Uh huh - Divorce City; had to be done carefully. Some might say slyly, or stupidly, but it had to be done, We have a wide staircase & the gate didn’t fit (no, I didn’t check the measurements) but there happened to be a very handy suitable bit of wood around so the at-first-annoyed-then-resigned-then thrillingly in problem solving mode so long as I left him completely alone-husband attached that to the stairs. He found it difficult to match everything up with the wall fixings which he generously put down to his rusty new baby skills, and so the gate didn’t shut perfectly for a while till he figured it out. One of our skinny cats can slink through the side gap but my dog can’t get around, under, over or through it. Easter was so difficult, she was on constant choc recce’s upstairs, stealing eggs & whatever else she could find. And then, if caught in the act, she’d pee in fright. I picked this gate because I’m totally clumsy and this doesn’t have anything to trip over when I’m careering down the stairs. The gate has also been thoroughly idiot tested by several of our children, who’ve entertained themselves carrying down precarious piles of long-forgotten (& filthy) crockery from their boudoirs to test their one-handed gate opening skills. Small things for small minds but at least their rooms are cleaner. I like the wood finish, it’s not noisy like metal gates, and it’s far safer & prettier than the ridiculous dog-proofing alternatives we’ve been working with (huge garden scarers - owls & hawks, husbands idea, reflective eyes, yeah right), I favoured cheap garden trellis which we all walked or fell through & thereby destroyed, and of course there was a deadly pile of assorted bags which my amazingly versatile dog used as both stepping stones and a loo. So now there is peace in our household. Job done, problem solved, I also liked the price & wouldn’t have wanted to pay more - they used to be half the price. I also like that you can easily remove the gate itself for hoovering or moving furniture etc, just take your time fitting it! And, thinking about our life with stair gates and our 5 kids, I find fitted gates are much more preferable to pressure ones, much safer; pressure ones leave marks anyway & Screw holes are easy to fill in after if necessary. I find this gate attractive & a pleasure to use, very soft wood

Good
Clear instructions, easy to assemble. Quality seems good. Make sure to use the correct screws as the screws provided may not always suit the surface you're fixing the gate to.

Fantastic gate, probably the best on here
Fantastic. So just about fitted this into a 72 cm opening just - by removing one of the nuts -made no difference and works perfectly (wide of opening has to be between 72 -78 cm, any longer and you need to buy some threaded bars from the garden shop or an extension). What I like about this stair gait is that it is easy to fix and its is solid, there is no trip bar so safety wise it is fantastic. It is easily removable too. 4 stars as it is the third one I have installed over the years, the last two came off the wall after a couple of months because the supplied screw is too short, so needed to re-fix them. You have to buy your own longer flat-top screws that fit the holes. The product is supplied with wood screws which is fine if you are putting it into wood only, but not a concrete wall or cavity wall - then you need to buy your own fixings, if they had mentioned this on the box I would give five stars. Installation points: fit the gait the right way up, the the laser typed metal side bit facing down, so you do not see the writing when fixed. Do not use the spanner to tighten the nuts, hand tighten and in a couple of days tighten a little more. There is a tiny plastic bit in the box which is easily lost, if you want to restrict opening to one side only make sure you do not loose this tiny piece - which is also a choking hazard during installation, so do not have the rugrat near you during installation!

Buen material

We now own three of these! Easy installation with paper templates for drilling. Wooden gate is sturdy without being too heavy or bulky, subtle design does not impact look for house too much. We find the opening mechanism easy with one hand (even carrying wriggling baby/heavy laundry in the other!) Width easily adapted to fit doorways or stairwells. Withstands baby/toddler attacks, but out older son (4 years) is able to open on his own with a bit of effort. Customer service from Babydan in the UK excellent (We lost some of the fittings for the first two when we moved house and they mailed new ones to Germany swiftly and for free!) Great product and company!
