Q: Can i detach the mounting piece and attach the unit one the mount is up on my ceiling?

The bracket that is mounted to the reel slides into the mounting plate that you attached to the wall or ceiling. As long as you have room on the side you slide the reel out of the bracket, you can remove the reel.

Q: how does it work in the cold

Dear Customer, Thanks for your question。 Sorry, the locking mechanism can not be removed because it might damage the inner structure of the cord reel. It can work at the lowest -15 degrees. If the temperature is too low, it can not work normally.
