Highly recommended. Using these we were able to replace the ancient PC's connected to our CNC machines with passively cooled SFF PC's. Didn't have any issues with setup, and they've been in use for over a year now without issue.

Worked perfectly on Windows 10 first time to connect an old peripheral to the USB port. Windows 11 driver also available. Excellent live chat with the manufacturer too.

This is a solid USB to serial adapter. Fair price for the quality, length and sturdiness. Uses common prolific chipset which Windows should install automatically. Overall connectivity is good, useful for a variety of tasks from console access to networking equipment to downloading data from PAT testers. Not sure on total speed however serial is limited to 900kbps.

If you've a DB 9 port on your vintage PC and need to connect to a usb device then this cable interface would do the job. I use this serial cable with Windows 10, and 7 but drivers need to be loaded. Back in the day a lot of Laptops had a db9 port for connecting to other devices for configuration. Nowadays, all laptops are usb or rj45.

This adapter is based on the Prolific PL2303 RA chipset - this is advertised as Win8.1, Win 10 and Linux compatible. The item arrived very quickly and looked exactly as the picture on this product page. When I first bought this adaper, I plugged it into my Win8.1 laptop and it was discovered straight away. It was assigned COM3: and it did not have a "!" or "?" in the Device Manager view. Since then I have upgraded to Win 10 and I can report that it just worked, with Win 10 installing the same latest driver as can be found on the Prolific website. Additionally, this cable has just worked without any fuss on every Ubuntu Linux build I have tried it in. Using PuTTY I have been able to connect to my Cisco ASA, routers, switches and Netscreen/Juniper firewalls witout any problems. [Edit: Updated 2016 to correct the Prolific chipset identfication, and add Win 10 & Linux compatibility observations.]

I made a huge mistake. I thought it had a female connection on the serial plug. It is a male. That is my fault as the product seems to be of excellent quality and in the right situation would be a good buy.

I work in Information Technology relating to power management and infrastructure. As such manage tens of millions of APC ATS, UPS, PDU, etc. Updating UPS Firmware is something that must be done to address bugs, security, feature enhancements for these systems. APC / Schneider like almost everyone in the industry continue to use the ancient RS-232 serial connector vs USB?!?! To add insult to injury every RS-232 Serial port on the UPS is NOT wired to the RS-232 standard nor is the provided serial cable! You’re also very hard pressed to have a RS-232 Serial Port on any laptop / computer system in 2025! As such the need to have an adapter like the one in this review is essential if you want to safely & securely connect and interface to a APC UPS via USB. All I can say is once the correct drivers are installed for whatever operating system in use will absolutely work. Which by the way I should call out this is also one of the few adaptors that support Windows, Linux, MAC OS etc. There are endless products that either only support a limited version of Windows OS or no Linux, Debian, BSD, support etc. Star Tech has been my / our product vendor for decades for many accessories and products because it just works! Solid product that will absolutely work in converting any APC UPS RS-232 RJ50 Serial cable to USB.
