After extensive research and a strict criteria (high quality and large) I found this chessboard. The quality is stunning, beautiful in fact and at 21 inches it’s large. Looking at different chessboards elsewhere, this one represents excellent value for money, the pieces are weighted and the finish is exceptional. If you’re looking for a large chessboard, that’s practical and of a high quality then this is the one.

Fantastic quality, large pieces and gorgeous smelling too (if you like polished wood like me). The pieces place and glide well and it all looks fantastic as well as being an impressive sized board. Great if you suffer from fat fingers like me and are constantly knocking fiddly bits over, no such trouble here. For forty quid no complaints....lovely item.

This is a really well made and attractive chess set. It's board is well put together and decorated. The chess pieces are large and artistically designed, especially the King and Queen. Overall this is an excellently produced set and it's a bit of a bargain at £40. I can't recommend it more to someone who wants a quality large wooden set.

I bought this to teach my young kids how to play chess (and draughts - bought separate playing pieces for that). Always wanted to have quite a nice looking reasonably large chess board that could be got out, played and then be packed away without the kids risking losing any of the pieces! This is great for that as all the pieces fit inside the board which folds in half and is held shut with small clasp catches. The pieces themselves are very nicely crafted, caricatured and colour coordinated and are quite appealing. The board's playing surface is also neatly detailed. The only slight downside is the fitted insert of the chess board where the pieces are stored... just feels a little cheap. It's a kind of plastic coated in a fuzzy green felt that has shaped indents where the playing pieces all sit. It looks fine and does the job... but just feels a bit low rent when practically everything else about the board looks and feels quite decent quality. Apart from that, this is a really nice chess set.

The big pieces are a delight to handle and look great. Clearly handmade to a pattern but every pawn is an individual! We really love the white King and Queen. The board and pieces have been sitting out since delivery as a coffee table display.

Wow! Just wow! That's what I thought when I set this board and pieces up. It looks (and smells wonderful). The pieces are not weighted as such, but their own weight is plenty, if that makes sense. Board weight 1363g 520mm (width) 515mm (height) 30mm deep (60 when closed) Each square is 55mm squared. The whole board folds into half and is fastened by two metal clips. Inside the board the pieces are snugly secured in a plastic, felt lined tray. The trays are removable so that you can replace the pieces into their relevant slots as they are taken buy you or your opponent. Claims on the packaging box itself says "made without child labour", and one that made me laugh to myself: "For people over 14 years." I guess that means a 13-year-old boy, for example, can't play chess on this board >.< This board is a real joy to play and at £45 (at time of writing this review) it really is a treat that you don’t want to pass up. It looks like a high end set at a vary reasonable price. I am extremely happy with this product. Also happy, as usual, with Amazon Logistics delivery service; you can now track your driver live so you know exactly where they are on a map, and so can plan your day around their estimated delivery time.

Bought two of these sets, one for myself and one for my nephew. Very happy with the result. Great quality. Durable pieces, well crafted. Very nice board, lovely design. Big board but very portable too. No negatives.

What a wonderful chess set for the money... Great quality, fabulous large chess pieces... Just how a chess set should look... No complaints whatsoever, would buy again.

Wonderful board to play with, im not one to leave reviews. Worth the money, you can see the imperfections from being hand made but it's one of a kind. Great detail and workmanship, no smell like some reviews. This will be a hand me down set and not a chin@se throw away. Just buy it, believe me i did my research. Only criticism is the flimsy plastic lining that houses the pieces when stored, just hot glue it in position. Big thumbs up from my family, who learnt to play on this board.

I bought this set nearly 6 years ago, so I could teach my 4 year old daughter how to play chess. Since then, she's not only learned how to play, but her little sister was born and is now learning chess to. I mention this not to brag (well, maybe a little, clever kids! haha) but to emphasize that despite this set now having been used by myself and a couple of rambunctious kids for years now, it's held up terrifically. The board and pieces are all well-made, the board can be easily folded up with the pieces inside to put it away, and the nice, big, wooden board and hand-carved pieces make a nice table-top decoration if you prefer to leave the board out on the table for long stretches of time (which we often do, because it's easier to convince the kids to play a few moves before arguing for screen time when the game is out in the open, ready for a match). The price has gone up a notable amount since my original purchase, but as long as the quality is still as good as the one I got, I'd say it's still worth it.

Bonne qualité générale, excepté le rangement intérieur en plastique léger et assez fragile qui n’est pas à la hauteur de la qualité du reste mais bon ce n’est pas le principal, en bref très bon pour le prix.

Excellent value for the money...only minor complaint is the plastic tray that holds the pieces had a small crack in it and it should be glued to the inside of the board, other than that minor issue, it is the nicest chess set I have ever had, and it is a nice, large board with large pieces, a great value all round, very happy I purchased it!
