Savor one chapter at a time
I have a very advanced reader (2nd grade but tested in at 8th grade) she reads independently mostly, but she still likes to be read to. The challenge is finding books that are emotionally appropriate but engaging for her reading level. This book does the trick. I read her a chapter at a time slowly at night, and the whole family is laughing. We've never read the real version, but this child version is entertaining the grown ups too. We recap the previous night's chapter and try to visualize Don Quixote's antics. I'm going to incorporate art lessons--it's such a fun read.

Multi generational love
I remember learning of this story when I was in school. Granted, I had to translate portions from Spanish in said class, which wasn't as appealing. But I still loved the story and the characters. My daughter came home when in 5th grade sharing they were reading this in class. We discussed it, and she begged to buy a copy. It was such a joy to read this story, together, with my daughter. I was reminded of parts I had forgotten, and she excitedly anticipated many parts with giggles for her more favorite parts.

9 years old was happy. I liked it too.
My son showed interest in knights. The book starts with "there was a man who went crazy from too much reading. He only read books about knighthood" - and what can be better than a shared interest. He finished the book in a week or so. Each day bringing stories of what happened. Good experience.

Too much of a stretch for an 8 year old
I want my grandchildren to be familiar with cultural references to this classic, phrases like "tilting at windmills" and the word "quixotic." They are 6 and 8 so maybe I was pushing it, but they just weren't interested, even though I read with lots of expression. I was starting at zero, too, since kids today don't read or hear stories of knights in shining armor, nor play at being knights, the way they did when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s. And these days, "princess" pretty much means "Disney princess." It's very condensed -- only 66 pages -- and a lot of the vocabulary needs to be explained as you go along. Plus there are very few pictures that illustrate arcane references.I'm not going to give up, though. I'll try again later.

Another version for kids
Each retelling can only include so much, and this version includes the major episodes. Sense enough to satisfy middle schoolers, this is no elementary retelling.

Recomiendo este libro para jóvenes que les guste leer y disfruten de la lectura en inglés. Es una buena adaptación de la historia del Quijote, con vocabulario y expresiones asequibles y nada denso, bueno para jóvenes con nivel B1 inglés.
