Stop politian from shredding this book!
Very pleasant tales for a contemporary audience Nothing derogatory or obscene. Took the English edition and the Hungarian edition which is sealed and wrapped as sold in Hungary to the librarian at the Sarasota County library to show how book banning works in Hungary. She will order the book for the Sarasota (Florida) county library system. The English and Hungarian books will be put on display at the Stonewall Archive in Fort Lauderdale to show how censorship works in Hungary.

New perspectives on traditional tales
The media could not be loaded. This selection of fairy tales was first published in Hungary in 2020, and has since been translated into English, winning the prestigious English PEN award. The editors asked authors to retell a classic story that was important to them, from a personal perspective, reflecting their own experiences in life. The stories have diverse characters in and people like Sir Ian McKellen have praised the book for its positive portrayals of people from very different backgrounds. “I wish I could’ve read this book when I was a child.”The stories turn the usual conventions upside down and I think children will enjoy spotting the differences. Snow White becomes Autumn Brown; defenceless princesses become young women with agency, and Thumbelina gets a life of her own. She lets the wind blow the sorrow out of her hair and learns to find someone who wants her for herself. Margaret the Giant Killer is set in Ireland. Koni’s Antlers is about a little fawn who makes a friend of a fox called Ronan. Koni worries because his antlers don’t grow as they should. His mother tells him to play with the hinds but he doesn’t want to. He finds happiness eventually and takes care of the woodland creatures all the days of his life. This book is gorgeously illustrated by Lilla Bölecz.

after alllll the hype, DISAPPOINTMENT.
wow, here I thought this book got it right. IT DOES NOT. Literally the first story is a horror story about a princess whose father the king tries to kill multiple times. Eventually the king manages to kill his daughter the princess, AND guess what? a prince then BUYS (!!) the dead princess’ corpse (!!!) and then kisses her back to life. seriously??? How is this any better than the “old” stuff. I bought this book to support what I thought was a positive upgrade to the old paradigm, which is why it was rejected by the Hungarian government. So glad I read it before gifting or reading it to a child in my life. I am a happy adult, I never ever have nightmares. after reading this one story I had nightmares. I will never open this book again. Terrible.

A modern twist on some old and new tales
The media could not be loaded. What a lovely fairytale book for children that shows inclusivity and that it's okay for boys to like unicorns and pink and for girls to dream of fighting monsters and defending realms. It covers some modern twists on old classics and some new stories I haven't heard of before. My unicorn pink prince who's 7 hung of every word excited to hear stories that didn't make him feel odd as he's often told he is weird for his long hair and toy choices. It's a well written book, we are enjoying reading it together.

Beautifully presented with uplifting fairytales
This fairytale book is beautifully presented. The illustrations on the front cover and throughout the book are wonderful, bringing the stories to life.I haven't heard of most of the stories in the book—they are gripping and fresh, holding my daughter's and my attention. The book is a fabulous size and sits perfectly in my handbag, for when we are on the move, but still want to catch up with the stories inside. My daughter's favourite story is about the kidnapped princess. The prince, Benedek, is no hero, in fact he is a disappointment, failing to impress his parents, siblings, and everyone else. But, he is a hero, he just doesn't know it. When he sees the message from the neighbouring kingdom, 'Ferrum seeks a dragon-slaying hero!' He decides to see if he can, at last, be the prince everyone expects him to be. Best of all a 'knightly title and steed are not required. So, Benedek sets off to become a dragon-slaying hero. The thing is, the princess hasn't been kidnapped, and the dragon isn't a fire-breathing monster. The stories in this book are inspiring. They teach us not to take things at face value, like Bebedek, but to find out for ourselves.A wonderful book and the perfect gift for any child no matter their age.
