This book quickly passed my litmus test for a good, solid Geomorphology text - does it have enough details of playas, meanders and riffles to meet A-level A* and undergraduate levels?Any text that doesn’t is too superficial; if it tackles small elements appropriately in-depth, larger ones usually follow handsomely.I’d expect nothing less from Richard Huggett (and now Emma Shuttleworth).It’s well-written, well-produced, packed with up-to-date information and – lively to read.And I hope it finds its way onto book shelves of GCSE Geography teachers as well.Geography in general is going through a bad Press with the public and certain parts of academia. And exam students appear to be taking up the subject because it is perceived as easy – a terrible indictment!We need more rigour and depth at GCSE and A-level, and this book could be pioneered as a catalyst for change at A-level, along with, dare I say, a new edition of Peter Haggett’s terrific Geography: A Global Synthesis.It's part of the Routledge Fundamentals of Physical Geography series - the others already published are on Soils, Biogeography and Hydrology, and I'm aiming to be pre-ordering the last in the series - on Climatology - when it comes out.
