This book is a brilliant translation of Harry Potter from English to it’s “sister language” Scots. Although these Germanic languages evolved alongside each other and are closely related, English speakers will have trouble understanding this book if they have no prior understanding of Scots as our language is phonetic and has unique vocabulary. This is not a book filled with badly spelt English or just English with an accent but is a recognised language in it’s own right spoken throughout Scotland. This translation is hilarious and filled with Scottish humour. A must read for Scots speakers or learners. This book has no relation to Gàidhlig which is a Celtic language from the Goidelic branch and is mostly spoken in some parts of the Highlands and Islands.

A gift for a friend who is a big fan of HP, they absolutely loved it. It’s hilarious and a fun little challenge to read, we even turned it into a drinking game.

Sent it to my daughter who recently moved to Scotland. Lots of laughs but still a fantastic read.

Great to read a book in Scots after spending my schooling being told it's wrong to use my own language. After reading some other reviews I feel I need to point out that the book is not written in Gaidhlig, Scots and Gaidhlig are different languages. It tells you twice on the cover that it is written in Scots so the publishers have not hidden it.

Never imagined this book for ‘Scot’s’ would be sold here, not that obvious in initial description when shopping.

I’m a Harry Potter fan and bought this book as I’m Scottish and wanted to see what it was like. I’ve got to admit I did recognise most of the words but there was quite a few I didn’t know. I can imagine a few people will struggle, other than that I enjoyed it.

I bought this for my Harry Potter loving adult friend. She absolutely loved it. The book is quality expected of any book. The fact that it was in Scots added an extra bit of specialness to the gift and made it more unique.

Brilliant book. Good to read a book in my native lead. Hope the rest of the Harry potter book get translated. Can't wait to read the next one.

A marvelous diversion - thoroughly enjoyed it! As an ex-pat Scot who has lived in the United States and Canada since 2001, this edition of J.K. Rowling's wonderfully written, expounded, and richly imaginative introduction to the world of Harry Potter was at once both greatly entertaining and highly amusing. The translator has done an excellent job of setting Rowling's standard English text to the everyday dialect that is spoken around Glasgow, Ayrshire, and Arran, areas with which I was once so familiar. Since I have been away for 17 years now, I was a little uncertain about how easily I would be able to follow the Scots narrative, to the point where I purchased a Scots-Standard English dictionary. But I need not have bothered! The story being related in this fashion brought me back to my days when I was a child in school. Once I re-acquired the rhythm of the Scots dialect ( which came flooding back in a matter of minutes), I barreled through the entire book over the course of three days. I won't spoil the fun by repeating them here, but many broad Scots phrases and characterizations of familiar characters had me rolling around the floor laughing. My Dallas-born and raised wife however commented that the text is unintelligible gibberish and cannot believe that I am able to understand it! It may be too much to ask, but I very much hope the rest of the Harry Potter series becomes available translated thusly. I for one would most definitely purchase the lot. Thank you to the translator for a job very well done!

Não sabia que “Escocês” é uma língua tão diferente do Inglês. Poderiam então colocar o nome como está na capa “…stane” e não stone.
