They're painted, so it's hard to say for sure, but if it's plastic it's too thin and would break. So I'd say yes, they're coated thin metal. I love this bra, very soft, comfortable, and smooth sides.

Probably a 36. I wear a 38C and that’s what I bought. It fits perfectly.

Does anyone know how wide the side panels are In inches on the size 36D that prevent the side bulge?

I don't have 36D but this is the most comfortable bra I ever had. I have a B cup so not too much to support. Just try one. Oh and I throw them in the washer and then air dry.

How stiff or padded are the cups?

Not stiff in the least. Padding is minimal. I have purchased 4. My granddaughter is trying them out as well.
