Rocks and Minerals in Thin Section: A Colour Atlas

This book explains quite a complicated subject in a very easy to understand manner.It’s very engaging and keeps you interested.I’ve learned so much from it.

i’m studying geology at durham university and this is exactly what i needed for my mineralogy module. perfect for people new to the subject and gives really clear information on the properties of each mineral along with useful photos of them under thin section

Book was in excellent condition and arrived promptly and I hope will help me cope with the optical differences of different rocks and minerals under the microscope, for my Open University module in earth science. Not for the faint hearted.

It will never be as good as a microscope but what a great book. Has examples of PPL and XPL thin sections. Also full of clear instruction on how to work out what's what with thin sections. Currently doing S209 with OU. Finding it very useful.

This book is very short and objective. The photos are excellent. Very Good!

I bought this because it was recommended for a class but it is very useful if you are just into rock hounding and really helps to identify minerals. It is organized by classification (silicates, oxides, sulfides, etc) so I would say you would have to have a slight background knowledge in geology to truly utilize but their is also great information to help you learn how to classify minerals if you want to learn more past just if a rock is sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic.
