A Powerful Hybrid Workhorse with a Few Trade-offs
The Panasonic Lumix S5 IIX is a significant upgrade over its predecessor S5, delivering impressive hybrid capabilities for both videographers and photographers. Its strengths make it a compelling choice, though a few considerations may sway some users towards alternatives. Pros - Phase Hybrid Autofocus: The S5 IIX finally brings phase-detection autofocus to Panasonic's full-frame lineup. This marks a huge improvement in accuracy and speed, especially for video and subject tracking. But it is still behind the Sony S7III S or for say any Sony camera with autofocus. Sony AF just works. - Unlimited Video Recording: Enjoy virtually limitless recording thanks to effective heat management. Shoot extended 6K, 4K, and high-framerate footage without overheating concerns. An advantage over Sony. - Image Stabilization: The in-body image stabilization works superbly, even better when paired with compatible stabilized lenses thanks to Dual I.S. 2. Beats Sony and Canon - Versatile Features: Explore ProRes RAW output, real-time LUTs, live streaming capabilities, and an abundance of video-centric tools. Beats Sony and Canon - Improved Design: Buttons, dials, and the fully articulating screen provide a more user-friendly experience. I like the A7iV layout a little better but this is not bad at all. Cons - Autofocus Still Lags: While massively improved, phase hybrid AF still falls slightly short of top-tier rivals from Sony and Canon, especially in low light. - Older Sensor: The 24MP sensor might be a limiting factor for those needing maximum resolution for cropping or large prints. This also contributes to a rolling shutter of about 22ms. The Panasonic Lumix S5 IIX is a fantastic mirrorless camera offering professional-grade video features and reliable stills performance in a compact package. If you're a videographer prioritizing unlimited recording options, excellent image stabilization, and a plethora of tools, the S5 IIX is definitely worth serious consideration. Photographers who demand very high resolution or the absolute best low-light autofocus may want to look at a7IV or other high-resolution options. I decided to return it purely for Autofocus performance and Rolling shutter. I hope Panasonic will put in a faster sensor and improve their first-generation Phase Detection based hybrid autofocus.
