We have been getting these every year for at least 12 years and every year it still feels new. It’s a beautiful, beautiful gift a beautiful learning experience and the butterflies do stay around.

Three year old grandson loved it! Learned so much! As a former teacher, I think it’s wonderful!

This is the perfect enclosure for our caterpillars. We use fresh milkweed for their food and have had 12 caterpillars transform into beautiful monarchs!!

This little cage helped us release 19 Monarchs so far. We prefer to use it sideways to accommodate more cats and find they have enough room to climb and "J" when they're ready. We put down paper towels to easily clean up after them (iykyk) and branches and create little walkways with sticks but typically have no more than 6 at a time inside. It's a sturdy cage and we've recommended this to friends who recently purchased after we gifted them a few caterpillars and milkweed. What a great learning experience for kids and adults! So far, we were even able to set up a little camera inside to catch one emerging!

So yes, this is just a hamper with a zipper and a clear window to see the action. Butterflies cost extra. We ordered two sets of larvae and it took about a week to get them after the kit arrived. The larvae arrived stacked and one set seemed like it didn’t get as much oxygen because the holes were blocked by the other jar. Those seemed smaller but still survived. Even though I read another review to open the hamper cautiously I still almost bashed my face in. My hamper arrived with two holes at the top seam and the caterpillars went straight for them, the little escape artists. Taped it up. The instructions said they would turn into chrysalis stage after 5 days but it’s been 10 and I just have huge caterpillars that weren’t about to share the little lid...and the food is looking like grungy ear wax! So we ran out and bought butterfly bushes and put the whole kit outside so they have some natural habitat and another food source. Hoping they’ll be doing alright!
