The Best $60 Book You'll Ever Buy
I was very hesitant to buy a book for $60. That's a lot of money for a book. However, I was hard pressed to find another book on the subject of old military rifles, especially one that came so recommended. So I took the plunge. I was not disappointed. This book is filled not only with high quality pictures of the rifles, their parts and their markings, but with pictures of the soldiers who carried them and some illustrations of how the actions work. Yet this isn't just a picture book. There's a lot of information jammed in that covers the history of the weapons and the countries and inventors who designed them. This is a reference book you can actually read cover to cover and enjoy. It very informative, interesting, and the authors manage to squeeze in some humor hear and there that made me laugh out loud.As for the scope, the authors make a point that this isn't mean to be a comprehensive-everything book. They strive to give coverage of all the bolt action military rifles you're likely to come across. It's also not a specialized book, so while they give a lot of detail on the rifles they cover, it certainly does go as in-depth as other books might. Fortunately, the authors will point out other specialized books that readers can check out to get more info on particular rifles. Plus the book is organized by country, so you can flip through the book to find what guns you're looking for.My only complaint about the book is the quality of the pages. They are very thin so you have to be careful about turning the pages otherwise you can crease or tear them.

Must have for Mil-surp bolt gun collectors!
I can't say enough good things about this book. It is a great source of information for anyone interested in collection old military surplus bolt action rifles like I do. The illustration, pictures, and notes are wonderfully informative. But the best thing about this book is how readable and funny it is. I laughed quite a few times at some of the funny pictures or author's comments. Often, I find myself referring to this book when I'm looking to buy additional old bolt guns. I also enjoy rereading chapters because it is so informative and entertaining. One of my absolute favorite books on this subject.

No longer relevant!
Really nice job of printing. Bland presentation of material. Thank the IT Gods for the Internet. This book, though beautiful, is the perfect example of whipping the dinosaur. Waste of money. Not some years ago.....but today.Publisher for 45 years...this is hard to admit....print is truly DEAD. Sorry for the update.

Lots of pictures but only low-to-moderate depth
I liked many things about this book, but sometimes the information is a little off. Some of the most interesting subjects barely take off. There are some funny anecdotes in there though.I like a lot of things about this book, but for the price it should have more depth.

Bolt action masterpiece
The book is not only a good read but the pictures are simply outstanding for this genre. The history of the rifles presented are not a cut and paste from old resources but a fresh outlook from individuals who have handled the weapons and kept up to date with the latest info. The photos are reproduced in high quality color with lots of inset pictures showing cartouches, arsenal markings etc. For the collector of surplus rifles this is one stop shopping at its best. I sincerely hope a semi-automatic rifle book is in the works as volume II.

This Book is not a replacement for a book focused on a particular rifle.
Nice book but exspensive as most books are. The $70 price I paid is the same price on the books cover so if you are looking for a bargain this is the same price you would pay at Barnes and Noble....you may even save money at B&N if you are a member.

Solid Reference Material. QC issues.
A good solid reference for the beginning collector. Also good for someone like me who has been collecting for a while, but still knows that there are all kinds of rifles out there that I have never seen. Three or four people at work have borrowed it to look up what that rifle stashed in Grandad's closet is. Great stuff. My only issue is that my book that were damaged in production. On a couple of the pages, the paper got folded over in production and then printed on. You see it every once in a while if you buy enough books.

Great book, worth the money
Nice overall info for all the countries and the rifles they used, not one model specific. Great book with lots of info for collectors on enthusiasts alike, worth the $70 price. A great book for my collection.
