Q: "If .. locked .. outside, it cannot be operated .. inside" - so can someone inside be locked in, regardless?! Or only if they don't also have a key..?

Can't be locked in there is a catch and latch on the inside. You can be locked out if you don't have a key.

Q: is this suitable for an outward opening door?

Hi, the Yale lock will work on both outward and inward opening and closing doors. The one thing to remember is to ensure the door catch is on the correct way? There is a curve on the facing edge of the door latch. Make sure that curve is on the correct way. The lock has to be dismantled to do this. Two screws have to be removed the mechanism removed and put in in the alternative position. The flat side of the latch has to be facing the front of the door. The key goes in the front facing lock.
