Holds hard and soft cover books easily and books of varying sizes and thicknesses. None of my books has presented it with any problem even large ones of A4 + . The perspex, attached with an elasticated cord to the seat, very effectively holds the book open. You do need a little care when turning the page to avoid snagging on the cord. I have not yet experimented with using the small pocket on the back of the seat to "hold your favourite chocolate bar" but I'm sure it would be perfect. It is very supportive and light but much easier to use with well thumbed books rather than fresh off the shelf with stiff spines.
