However, as other have indicated, you can reduce this further by trimming the metal components of the duct. In fact, if you managed to glue/seal the fan housing directly to the plastic vent cap, the whole assembly requires only 5 inches. So there are a lot of options to put this unit in a thinner wall. If you trim the duct work, just be sure you have means to tape/seal everything once it is in the wall. On the final step, the length of the flexible duct is what enables you to tape/seal all the connections on the exterior side before compressing everything back into the wall. **Q: Can this be left on 24 hours/day in a utility closet?** A: Indefinitely, I am not sure, but it does run here in 100 degree+ temps for most of the 24 hour day and has done so for about 4 years. If the temps are not too high it might be like one of those machines that if it runs all the time it will go until the bearings go out after a bunch of years. **Q: Is it loud? Can you have a conversation In front of it?** A: It's not very loud, yes you could have a conversation near it.
