First of all, it's been proven that the color red for some reason, makes it easier for most with dementia to "see" the food. Science says it's less confusing to patients, but they don't really know why. The partition walls make is SO much easier for my husband to eat on his own. His coordination is lacking now and so having a wall to press the utensil against to fill, has been great. Also there is a silicone ring around the bottom to keep the plate from sliding away or being pulled easily into his lap. I wash them by hand, but it says you could put them into the dishwasher top shelf. There is a wide rim around the plate that is easy for him to hold with one hand when he wants to.
