Almost always well-curated pieces, and the ABRSM grading is very well-put together… they’ve got lots of experience!! Check (if you can!) the months that are covered by each edition. Sometimes there are two editions in a year for a given grade (i.e., January-June; July-December), and the covers look identical. You can use both editions for your exam. But just be aware that if you purchase a book and find different pieces from what you were expecting from somebody else’s copy, this is probably why. However: When booking exams it’s worthwhile checking when the pieces you are working on expire for that grade. There is usually an overlap between an old edition and the new edition. So, for example, a 2023-2024 Grade 3 edition might extend into 2025. But you can’t mix and match between two different years editions (for example, between a Grade 3 2023-2024 edition and a Grade 3 2024-2025 edition) of the same grade. So if your timeline for learning the pieces for a particular grade cross between two separate editions for the same grade, you can’t mix your choices between the two even though they’re both the same grade. (Rock school is far more tolerant of picking pieces from different years, providing it’s the same grade, obviously.) It’s very confusing. But this is ABRSM, the gold standard in some ways. Moral: always check with the ABRSM website (there is a wealth of information on their website) about all of these issues and more; or call them directly. Hope the above makes sense. It can be very confusing!!

Arrived in good condition, ABRSM grade 4 materials are early intermediate, using multiple sharp and flat key signatures with more complex rhythms. All a BRSM materials have YouTube videos to assist with the learning, which can be really helpful if the student is just beginning on this difficulty of playing. Comprehensive, no need to pull in other exam materials listed in the back of the book, unless you want to curate for a recital. Worth revisiting after the season is over, a great book for performance with any student.
