A Book of Common Prayer

No he podido encontrar nada q me gustara del libro: ni el estilo ni la historia. Primero q leo de la autora y último. No podría decir de qué va este libro. Lo acabé porq estab en inglés, si no lo hubiese dejado. Me parecieron, los diálogos, de lo más absurdo.

De comum, A BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER não tem nada. Pelo contrário, o romance de 1977, de Joan Didion, é ambicioso, político e brilhante – como sempre, se tratando desta autora. A questão que guia a narrativa é a intersecção entre história e revolução, e como isso reverbera na vida pessoal das personagens. Localizada numa república imaginária na América Central, chamada Boca Grande, a trama é narrada por Grace Strasser-Mendana, uma expatriada americana casada com um dos herdeiros da família dominante local. Ela não é a americana típica, é bom dizer. Estudou antropologia com Claude Levi-Strauss, em São Paulo, onde conheceu seu futuro marido, e se casou. Seu treinamento lhe dá um olhar privilegiado, ao observar a dinâmica política do país, e a flora e fauna – especialmente oligárquica – do local. A personagem central, no entanto, é Charlotte Douglas, que vai para o lugar em busca da filha revolucionária – ecos de Patty Hearst aqui – que se uniu a um grupo de Marxistas, promoveu atos de terrorismo, e fugiu. Charlotte ouve dizer que moça pode estar em Boca Grande, um lugar cuja história, aliás, é bastante nebulosa, e que parece um mundo a parte – embora lembre em diversas camadas qualquer república das bananas por aí. O passado de Charlotte também é nebuloso – perda de um filho recém nascido, um marido abusivo com quem ela ata e desata o tempo todo – e, por mais que queira o evitar, a personagem não é Boca Grande, e tem de enfrentar, mais cedo ou mais tarde, sua história pessoal. Já na primeira página, ela está morta, então, o romance se estrutura na tentativa de resgatar sua história pelo ponto de vista de Grace, que narra com distanciamento e olhar bastante crítico. A Book of Common Prayer é Vintage Didion, com sua prosa elegante e meticulosa, na qual nenhuma palavra parece fazer figuração, todas têm uma razão de existir ali. A narradora é um estratagema que liberta Charlotte de mais um fardo. Como ela mesma poderia contar essa história, se nem ela é capaz de figurar o que está acontecendo? Não que Grace também o seja, mas aí entra uma enganação bem sacada. Acreditamos – não devíamos, mas... – na fala de Grace. Ela é persuasiva. Ela também é uma mulher, rica, branca e americana, numa terra onde o que menos existe são pessoas assim. Seu poder de persuasão está exatamente nesse seu status. Porque deveríamos duvidar dela? É nessa sutil questão que Didion faz o retrato de uma elite que tudo pode. E tudo quer.

In this uncommonly excellent prose, Ms. Didion describes an incredible scenario of a revolution in a Caribbean country. The country is dirt poor. There is no good water, there are no proper sewers and there are few good roads, except the one highway that leads to the house of El Presidente. The people live in squalor and there are only a few people in this island of the damned who are in fact solvent. The story tells of the tale of an American lady, norteamericana, who comes to the island, for reasons even she herself does not know. Her life has been tragic and strange. Her child becomes an American revolutionary and is involved in the hijacking of a plan from California to Utah. She lives an underground life and has no connection to her parents, whom she rejects socially and economically. Didion's reporting style writing is almost a perfect match for telling the story of this obscure countries political corruption and the insurgency that exists within. She uses her incredible ability to turn a phrase and then to use it multiple times for an emphasis that is extraordinary in painting the picture of the world about her. Charlotte Douglas has come here to figure out something, but what it is hard to tell. She seems to be adrift in the impoverished lands of Boca Grande which translates to "Big Bay" or also as Didion points out to "Big Mouth." Those in charge do have big mouths and talk out of both sides of it. There is constantly a strange dance performed by the few landowning ruling class that is constantly trying to shift the balance of power on the island to accommodate their own personal purposes. In the ensuing revolutionary action, Charlotte is actually killed. She could have easily avoided this fate by leaving the country, but instead, she insists on staying and ends up shot and left for dead on the lawn of the abandoned American Embassy. The beauty of the story is in the writing more than the events. With pure journalist style mixed with incredible fictional reality, Didion creates what could be typical of the Central American/Caribbean countries and their constant revolutions. Many get caught up in them and never emerge. Charlotte is one who does not emerge. As modern fiction, the book has a style that is unique to Didion. The smoothness of the writing and the deadpan descriptiveness is purely hers. It is the one book that she has written that is truly appropriate for all Americans to read. The book is highly recommended for those looking to see great fiction encompass the horror of revolution.

Kind of hard to get into but once you do its good

The novel and its fictional setting, Boca Grande, both reminded me of Buzz Aldrin's description of the moon as "magnificent desolation." Very few authors let you know at the very beginning you are going on a very sad ride with people who will have no happy endings. They know many readers will put the book down. But Didion was that confident in her ability to capture the reader's imagination, and she was right. Her spare, precise, sometimes heartbreaking prose was like no one else's. Astonishing. Nitpick: no one would call the M3 submachine gun a "carbine."
