Not Designed or Manufactured Well, Leaky and Hard to Use
The media could not be loaded. It’s embarrassing that these are MIUSA when the Chinese versions work better. First off, these are made out of #5 plastic — polypropylene. It’s a hard formulation and the grip ridges around the edge are sharp and very uncomfortable to use.The flip-out carry loop is ridiculous as it’s thin and feels fragile. Who wants to carry around a mason jar like that anyway? The real problem though is that it’s too hard to open that part without also opening the lid, which brings us to the next problem:Detents / lid closure. The lid doesn’t close securely. It pops open very easily and allows whatever is inside to leak. It pops open if you even invert it slowly with water inside. Again, who would even think of using a carry loop in this situation?Lastly, the silicone gasket. It’s obviously cut out of a sheet of silicone and flat, unlike normal o-ring seals. The problem is that it’s cut to the exact size of the crevice it fits into, and thus it falls out if you so much as lift the lid off. The result is that each time you unscrew the lid, you end up with the gasket falling out either into the jar or onto the ground. It needs to be a few mils larger so it actually STAYS in the lid. See my video where I just invert the lid on my counter and the gasket falls out, then I make double sure to press it in extra hard (not that you even can) and it still falls out with the slightest tap.Lastly, these leak around the rim in the best cases, even with the gasket in place properly. If you over-tighten it, the gasket will bunch up and also leak profusely. It’s the wrong durometer, the wrong shape, and the place it fits into isn’t molded properly. Ever wonder how every commercial plastic soda bottle from the past 40 years manages to not leak despite the dirt-cheap caps with no separate gasket? Whoever made these is wondering that same thing (the secret is that they’re slightly conical to be self-sealing with the proper durometer materials). This is really not rocket science here. Countless other companies have figured out how to make lids and spouts for drink cups that suffer from none of these issues. I’d suggest that the product designers go buy a Hydroflask and take a good hard look at how they managed to get everything right with their lid. This needs tooling changes and part changes so if they’re still shooting this same mold, I’d really advise strongly against buying this product. Look at MasonTops or Mason Jar Lifestyle instead. We didn’t buy these from Amazon but sadly from a site that makes returning them more difficult, so into the donation bin they go.
