It's not too difficult at all if you're technically inclined, just be careful to not damage the ribbon cables and connectors. The only downside to this is that you can't really use the device anymore, there's no apps, no updates, and the (awful) iTunes software doesn't exist anymore, but you can still get an Apple Devices app for Windows and a Mac will still connect to get your saved music and photos off the device if that's what you need to do. Good for about an hour and half of use on WiFi streaming music. Voltage quickly drops and shuts down apps. Rapidly drops from 50% charge to zero with no warning. Purchased two. Same results in two different phones with two batteries. Cannot recommend these.
