The absolute pinnacle of video games and a masterpiece of narrative storytelling.
This is the best video game ever to be produced in Earth's history. I'm not exaggerating. I consider myself a pretty avid gamer and I've played some fantastic games. This game is every bit the masterpiece that countless professional reviews will claim. No other game has felt so... visceral and real as this one. There are hundreds of reviews that you can read about this game that will go over all the details, nuances and feelings that this game evokes, but I want to keep my opinion broad. Naughty Dog has a track record of producing some of the best video games the world has ever played. Uncharted 2 and 3 are clear examples of this. They have taken everything they have learned from decades of game-making and piled it into this emotionally-wrenching game. The story is half of this game, the other half being the gameplay. Both are absolutely spot-on. The story and characters are completely original and feel very real and grounded in reality. Some have said that it feels predictable, and while I won't deny that some things felt obvious I was absolutely surprised and horrified at some parts. The story has incredible pacing, allowing the action to die down while you are scavenging for supplies only to be ambushed minutes later forcing you to scavenge and fight for your life at the same time. You are introduced to new characters regularly to keep things moving and the feeling of progression feeling fresh. Supporting characters feel as real as the main characters and their actions show flaws and mistakes that everybody makes. Gameplay is among the best I've experienced. The Remastered version for the PS4 takes this even further by offering higher-resolution and double the framerate of the PS3 version. The weapons all feel powerful in their own right. The real-time weapon-crafting system is great. I've played other games (such as Resident Evil 5) that have done a terrible job at real-time inventory management but The Last of Us nails it. It's easily accessible, easy to use and absolutely manages to give a real sense of urgency when you have to make a molotov cocktail while clickers are searching for you. Enemy AI is good, especially at higher difficulties. If you are an experienced gamer, I'd recommend "Hard" to start with. "Normal" tends to throw supplies at you too abundantly and I found myself creating weapons I didn't need just so I could pick up more supplies. My only complaint with gameplay is that I feel as though Joel's character should really have a knife on him rather than creating breakable shivs. I realize it's largely there to create additional gameplay elements, but it tends to break the immersion at times. The visuals in this game are beyond stunning. The PS3 version was absolutely breathtaking (especially for 8-year-old hardware) and the Remastered edition cranks the visuals up to 11. The environment is really its own character in this game and the enhanced visuals really help bring that character to life. The game plays in full 1080p @ 60FPS. There's an option to lock the framerate at 30 FPS to get the feeling of the original game. And for those who claim they can't tell the difference between 30 and 60, they're lying. Lock this game at 30 and the difference is quite jarring. It's by no means unplayable at 30 but the increased framerate is a very welcome addition. This version includes the same Photo Mode that was introduced with inFamous: Second Son. It's an incredible photographic tool for creating screenshots. It can be activated at any time that isn't a scripted cutscene and gives you full cinematic control over the frame, then allows you to create screenshots with the controller's SHARE button. This game is the absolute pinnacle of storytelling in video games. Every other narrative I will now judge against this game. If anybody ever questioned whether video games are art, this game can answer that question definitively. It's better than any book I've read or movie I've watched, it is an art form and the most beautiful one I've ever experienced, regardless of medium.

Sell Your Kidney If You Must! Please Play This Game.
Everything I discuss includes the DLC Left Behind as well. TLOU has been the talk of the video game world since its debut last June. I finally caved to the hype and bought it December for the PS3. My only regret is that I went six unnecessary months not experiencing this absolute masterpiece of a game. As a testament to how much I love this game, I’m currently on my 12th playthrough in 6 months. I have pile of neglected titles waiting to be played, but I find myself returning to this world over and over again. A word of warning: This game is not for the faint of heart or those sensitive to grittier elements in video games. There’s a lot of violence, death, blood, and language. While I found none of it to be gratuitous, it definitely is not for everyone. For those who never played: Gameplay: It’s different from a lot of games in the fact that the controls are what I would describe as less than precise. This design is intentional. You’re a middle-aged man struggling in a cruel world. You aren’t a Navy Seal or a super hero and the controls subtly add to that character element. I think it was a brilliant move by ND to give you an unsteady hand (which you can upgrade over time if it drives you crazy). It adds to the difficulty, the stress, and the realism. If you like running and gunning and taking down baddies like a boss, you’re going to struggle here. Replay value: 12th playthrough, enough said. Story/Characters: This is where the true magic is. The premise of the story is as old and worn and ‘unoriginal’ as anything out there. Pandemic outbreak, collapse of civilization, welcome to the nitty-gritty world of survival of the fittest. Honestly, how many times has that been done? Yet the story has stuck with me, or more appropriate, haunted me, long after I put down the controller. This is due to the outstanding talents of the writers, voice actors, and programmers that brought these characters to life. Joel and Ellie (and the rest) aren’t just fictional characters to me; I became emotionally invested in them over time. TLOU breathed new life into the horror/survival story done so many times before and I applaud them for it. Graphics: Stunning. The cinematics are amazing and actual gameplay footage is hardly a noticeable transition. The character animations are top-notch. However, what really stand out to me are the environments. The atmosphere of the post-apocalyptic world hasn’t been rendered so masterfully since Half-Life 2. Creepy scrawls on the wall, blood smears across the floor, newspaper clippings begging to be deciphered, abandoned corpses left to rot, homes quickly abandoned. The environments are complemented by the periodic optional conversations you can engage in about different elements of the area. Whether you’re explaining to Ellie why people would execute military officials or telling her about a dumb teen movie poster she’s wondering about, it adds another level of depth to the entire experience. Soundtrack: Perfect for the story. Gustavo Santaolalla has a fan for life. I listen to it all the time. Difficulty: Easy, Normal, Hard, Survivor, and Grounded. Personally, I think the best way to experience it is going straight to Survivor mode. It’s hard, it’s terrifying, you have no listening bonus, and you’re cowering for your life every moment. You’ll die a lot, so if you’re easily frustrated, back it down a difficulty setting. There’s no shame playing a game on a lower difficulty, despite what some gaming ‘elitists’ believe. For me, the challenge is what made it so engaging. If you’re not that type, play your way so you enjoy it more. Grounded mode is only for the truly dedicated. Its major frustration comes from the lack of checkpoints (respawn points, whatever you want to call them). The AI is meaner, you’ll die a lot, and then you’ll die more. It’s a sibling of Dark Souls in that regard. If you owned the PS3 version: It’s up to you whether it’s worth purchasing again. I think it’s well worth it. Differences (graphics): It is absolutely gorgeous. No joke, I stopped and stared at a worn, plastic sheet blowing in the wind, purely in awe of how good it looked. It was beautiful on the PS3; ramp it up on steroids on the PS4. New Additions from PS3: The biggest addition is a photo mode, which is awesome (and allows me to gawk further at the upgraded graphics). There are also some smaller elements, such as being to completely turn off the HUD or the aiming reticule on any difficulty. While not major changes, these subtle customization options really add to the experience. Lastly, the cinematic commentaries and the Grounded: Making the Last of Us Documentary were both fascinating. The documentary gave me an additional level of respect for this creation. The commentary from Troy Ashley, and Neil also changed the way I viewed some elements of the story, adding depth and causing me to notice extra details. I loved watching them. Left Behind DLC-awesome! Great additional story, despite its length. That’s $15 worth of content, so the actual game is $35. Tl;dr: Go buy it! Right now! Sell your kidney if you must! It’s the best video game I’ve ever played (I’ve got 19 years of gaming to my name), finally dethroning TLoZ: Ocarina of Time after 15 years of well-earned glory. Video games are an art (ahem, Mr. Ebert) and The Last of Us is a masterpiece. In my opinion, it is one of the best works of fiction of any entertainment medium.

Siempre sucede.
