Well-designed, easy to operate and clean, and makes PERFECT coffee
I'll start by saying I'm an a real coffee enthusiast. Having works in countries around the world who prepare some of the finest coffees in the world, I've developed a taste for excellent coffee. Years ago I used the Bodum electric Santos, but Bodum discontinued that product. More recently I've been using the Techovorm Moccamaster, the highest-rated electric drip coffee maker. It's an excellent product and makes very good coffee. For variety, I recently ordered the Bodum Santos Vacuum Coffee Maker. I read previous reviews where folks were saying that their pot exploded, etc - my personal opinion is that, if used as directed, this will never happen. The coffee maker works off of water vapor pressure, so if you're mindful when making your coffee I don't think you'll have problems. I've been using mine for about 3 weeks and I have zero doubts that my unit will malfunction. I've experimented with the process and the chronological steps and will share it here - it works well for me. I will add that I like very strong coffee. 1. First, fill the decanter with purified or spring water with the number of ounces of water of your choice. Place the decanter on the heat source and turn the heat on to medium. 2. Grind the coffee using the coarsest "French Roast" grind. My favorite full-bodied coffee is Peet's Major Dickason's Blend, a dark roast. It and other coffees can be ordered online from Peet's Coffee. I like Peet's because they roast, package and vacuum-seal your coffee and send it out the same day. You receive very fresh coffee in about 4 days. Fresh coffee is critical in this process. 3. Insert and secure the upper bowl to the lower decanter using a small amount of pressure to make sure the fit is good. Make sure you have already inserted the plastic filter into the upper bowl before securing the upper bowl to the decanter. 4. Add the ground coffee to the upper bowl. I use 1 tablespoon of coffee for every 3 ounces of water; sometimes I add a scoop more. For 24 oz. of water, I add 8 scoops (24 divided by 3), then I add one more scoop. 5. Turn the heat source to high. Since the water has already been heating, the vacuum process should occur in just a couple of minutes. 6. When the water heats to a certain temperature, all of the water will have risen to the upper bowl. It appears to be boiling, but it is not - it is just additional steam coming from the decanter to the upper bowl. Stir the coffee grounds to make sure they're evenly distributed. 7. This is where my process differs from most others. Others will advise you to now take the coffee maker off of the heat source which means the coffee in the upper bowl will almost immediately flow back down into the decanter. I prefer a stronger cup that tastes more like French Press, so I do not eliminate the heat source right away. I turn the heat down to low or med-low and continue to let the vapor rise into the upper bowl. I let the coffee brew for about 5 minutes...THEN I turn off the heat source and then the coffee flows down into the decanter. 8. Once all of the liquid has gone back down into the decanter (this takes only a few seconds), gently twist the upper bowl and lift it off the decanter. Place the upper bowl into the provided plastic "stem". 9. That's it. You should now have strong but clean-tasting coffee. A final note: I prefer this coffee over my Technovorm MochaMaster. Summary: I know this process sounds tedious and time-consuming. It is not at all - I have merely described the steps in detail. After only a couple of times, you will be able to prepare the coffee very quickly - only the steep time adds minutes to the process. Good luck, and enjoy your delicious coffee!!

A great cup of coffee--but with some caveats (Revised)
Edited to add: I just heard back from Bodum. They had asked me to send them a photo of the broken beaker and my proof of purchase, which I did. They told me that glass is not covered under the warranty. That's peculiar, as there is almost nothing BUT glass there! Amazon does not have a replacement beaker, so I went to the Bodum site. They are out of stock. The selling price is $50.00. I am very disappointed. I used this perhaps ten times and treated it with the same care as my expensive, delicate martini glasses. It broke spontaneously. I can't see spending another $73.00 on a replacement, so I'll look for a similar device from another manufacturer. (end edit) Having a coffeepot that looks like a science experiment makes the geek in me very happy. It also makes a very clean, smooth cup of coffee. The filter, held in place by a spring, looks iffy--it's grooves in a plastic disc--but very effective. It will work best with a comparatively coarse grind. I've been using mine for three months. Today, the funnel (the top globe) broke. A piece of it, about an inch on each side, popped out. I didn't drop it or bump it against anything. I'm hoping to get a replacement under warranty. I have the 1-liter model. Since I am making coffee only for myself, the second and third cups are lukewarm to cold. That's not a dealbreaker, but if I wanted piping hot coffee for the second and third cups, I'd keep it in a thermos. When I make a pot, I put it on the medium-low flame on my gas stove. I set a timer for 9 minutes. That's the point at which most of the water has risen to the top globe. I used a flame disperser at first, but the Pyrex seems to handle the low flame with no problem. Using the disperser, it takes a bit longer--12 minutes compared to 9. There's a little more fiddling around to make a pot with this than your typical automatic coffee maker, but I think the resulting cup is worth the effort. Cleanup is a bit more work, as well. The coffee grounds end up quite dry, so I use a rubber spatula to scrape the grounds into the compost. Then a quick swish with a dish brush and hot water does the rest.

I bought this just before Christmas so it's been in constant use for the last 3 1/2 months. I've been through many different coffee makers over the years and for my particular tastes this is the best. No, it won't make you an espresso but if the thing you are after is the best 'long' coffee you can get then I think this device takes some beating. It gives the depth of flavour of a French press except without the sludgey bits - very clean and zingy. It's marginally slower to use than a French press but much quicker than a filter machine and I think the results are far superior. When I use it, I actually boil the kettle and put boiling water straight into the bottom jug. I then put the coffee-loaded upper funnel into the bottom jug and turn the gas on. The water immediately rises into the top jug and starts bubbling. I (carefully, it's top heavy!!) give the brewing coffee a stir then I turn the heat down as low as it'll go and give it exactly 3 minutes. At that point, it's off with the heat and remove the jug to a heatproof trivet. A minute or so later, you're good to remove the top funnel and drink. From the point the kettle boils, it takes you less than 5 mins to have perfect coffee. Using this method, it's repeatable, sludge-free and (for my taste) perfectly brewed. I found the timings a little erratic if I just stuck it on the gas with cold water and of course this method takes longer / uses more energy - the kettle is more efficient :) It's very simple to clean but of course as it's a whole load of glass the clumsy need not apply! Not a cheap item to drop.... In all, I love it - it was around £45 when I bought it and it seems to have now gone up unfortunately..... Still worth it if you like coffee IMO.

Superbe !

We love this maker as it is a conversation piece when people come over. It makes a good amount in one go and we've found a shortcut which means we can get a full 8 cup brew in 5 mins . This is a second one as we smashed the first and didn't want to go back to what we had before or use these new plunger things. We couldn't find it in the shops, so thank goodness for amazon. The package was delivered on time with no fuss nor damage. So YES we recommend this product as it makes a large volume of good tasting coffee and sets the house alight with the smell.

Caffettiera ottima.
