Please give the inventors of this gate the Nobel Prize
I don't write many reviews, but this product is honestly so good, I felt compelled to share with others who are on the fence with this due to the price. It is pricey, yes, but there's nothing else out there like it and it immediately solves for all the issues you currently have in your life with integrating a new cat into the home, or cats that don't get along, etc. Immediately. It took about 2 hours in total to set up, and none of it was difficult - most of the time was spent adjusting it to fit our hallway archway and the top part of our hallwaly is sized differently as the arch curves in. Wasn't sure if it would work, but it sure did (see picture). We did take measurements before ordering, so be sure to do that. It DOES help to have 2 people; my husband set up most of it and then both of us were needed to make adjustments while he held it in place. It is sturdy once you tighten all of it up, but doesn't damage walls or sideboards - all will be restored once we take it down. It isn't super heavy once fully assembled, so yes, one person could do this themselves, but if you have someone who can help you it does make it easier. He assembled it all on the ground first, and then we together moved it into the hallway and made the adjustments as needed. Follow the instructions on configuration for your setup. We took in an outdoor cat that someone dumped in our neighborhood. After a few weeks of her making her home on our patio, we brought her in permanently. Our 14 year-old senior "only pet his whole life" cat did not take too favorably to this, so we are letting him acclimate slowly to this idea and baby gates have helped, but are cumbersome and the new kitty learned how to open them, jump them, etc. so we resorted to unfortunately having to keep her in a bedroom all day and only letting her out when she was supervised. Even the "tall baby gates" were not a solution - this cat gate is the ONLY solution and I'm so grateful I found it, we were at our wits end of not having to shut the new cat in a room all day to keep her seperate, and also give our own senior cat time to adjust...and being able to still maintain normal life like getting a laundry basket from one end of the house to the other. This gate has been great as my husband and I don't have to fiddle with the baby gates and screens anymore either - just in and out like a regular door. Its also very quiet and latch handle is high enough the cat will not be able to open it either! We don't intend to have it up forever, just until the cats are more integrated. For now it gives us peace of mind, and if we are gone all day at work, we don't have to feel badly that the new cat is shut in a room all day. She has half the house and the senior resident cat has the other half. We switch them out once a day as well so they become familar with each others' areas. Its sturdy and she cannot climb it either - the bars are close enough together so neither cat is able to shove their head thru the gaps (which was a problem with some other traditional baby gates) so that also gives us peace of mind. Not sure if it will work for kittens who may have smaller heads and bodies - that is something to consider. Also, this likely would not be strong enough to hold back a medium sized or larger dog. For small/tiny dogs less than 20 lbs, it probably would work just fine. Pros: Ease of use, ease of assembly, return to normalcy of life's daily tasks, airflow through the house, cats can see each other and put paws through the bars to touch each other, structure is sturdy and safe, no sharp parts or jagged edges that we can see - overall a huge win. Cons: Price, but it is what it is Thrilled with the purchase and if you are on the fence of if this will work for you, just do it...you will not regret it!

Buy this gate - you'll be happy you did.
Okay, seriously. I don't understand the reviewers who said "instructions not clear" or "parts don't go together". At least in my case everything was very nicely packaged. All parts present. Instructions very clear - no ambiguity at all. And in no way did I need two people to assemble it. Easily a one person job. The finished door and frame are VERY solid. Lots of steel. I'm impressed with how well it works. The only tiny nit I might have is the latch. It's plastic and if it breaks there'll be a bit of an issue fixing it. But that's only a potential future issue. For now - it works wonderfully. Completely alleviates the tension we used to have when opening the door from the garage to the kitchen in that there MIGHT be a cat waiting to zip out. Now we have a secure "catlock". Regular door at one end and this safety gate at the other. The twenty bucks extra for white was worth it - blends in nicely with all the rest of the white trim. Pricey but worth it.

BEST to introduce cats! Sturdy!
We are sheltering one of our friendlier stray cats from all this excessive heat and rain, but we already have three house cats in our small home, so we decided to give this item a shot. By all means, it definitely isn’t on the cheap side, but it was WORTH EVERY PENNY. It works like a charm in keeping our stray and our furbabies safe in our home. It’s made from Japan and it’s quite a sturdy and minimalist-lookikg product. It was okay putting it together, but the instructions come with it and would be easier as a two-man job. We also bought the sheer panels from Amazon Prime to give our cats more security and privacy. If you’re looking to separate your home for whatever reason, especially for cats who can jump most normal pet gates, this is the one for you :)

Expensive but indispensable and worth the cost
Prior to purchasing this gate I tried a 4 foot high gate. My cats laughed at it and jumped over with no difficulty. The Richell gate presented a formidable barrier. My cats now look at it and have given up trying to bypass the gate. Putting it together took some time but no special tools or technical knowledge. In my case some parts were missing. A phone call to the manufacturer promptly rectified the problem. I commend Richell USA for it’s attention to customer support. Fit and finish of the gate is flawless. It is quite sturdy. It will contain all cats except perhaps the largest most aggressive ferals which most people do not keep in captivity anyway. Keep in mind that it is sold as a cat gate. I would not recommend it as a barrier for a large powerful dog such as a pit bull. I am seriously considering a second gate for the hallway leading to the same entrance so that I can create an isolation corridor. This will prevent cats from escaping by following me through the first gate. It will also allow air from the rest of the house to enter the cat room (when the pocket door is closed) so as to provide additional ventilation and temperature control. If you are thinking of purchasing this gate, I suggest you purchase one ASAP. You won’t regret it.

A stress inducing mistake, wish I could get a refund
Main Disappointments: 1. Incorrect parts were shipped. 2. The gate is poorly made, breaking two extension poles upon installation. 3. Advertised "expansion" size is misleading; did not fit my 40" hallway even with the extension pole. Reasons for Purchase: 1. All vertical bars prevent my climbing cat from getting caught. 2. Tall enough to discourage jumping. 3. Seamlessly designed door with a simple latch. 4. Aesthetic beige color. Why I Regret My Purchase: I bought this gate to keep my cat safe after moving to a new apartment with outdoor access. As a busy veterinary student in my clinical year, I had a narrow window (4 days) to move and prepare before leaving for an out-of-state externship spanning 2 weeks. My cat gets stressed and destructive if confined, so I needed a reliable gate. During assembly, I discovered incorrect parts. We received 4 poles that were bottom door slats (8) instead of 4 top door slats (8) so the door to the gate was only able to be assembled halfway. With no time to resolve the issue, I left for my trip, worried about my cat's safety and potential damage to the new apartment. I was so distraught on my way to the airport, my friend decided to go back to my place and try to assemble the gate even with the incorrect pieces. To assemble the gate, she had to take some pieces apart which required a lot of effort and time. While she was assembling the gate, it fell on her and two of the extension poles (4) snapped from their bottom connectors that go around the adjuster poles. Since I was at the airport, I didn’t understand what had happened to the gate, but she told me she fixed it with tape. My friend then attempted to place the gate in the hallway where I wanted it, but the hallway was 40" my cat escaped through the poles with the 4 extension poles provided. I asked her kindly to move it to the doorframe and it should fit there. The gate fit in the doorframe, and I planned to buy an extra pole when I got home so I can move it into the hallway later. I felt like the crisis had been averted. Upon returning, I found my cat had gotten through the taped broken extension poles, escaped, and caused chaos. I was lucky she did not get into any accidents while I was gone, roaming a house in pure turmoil with hazards everywhere because I didn’t finish putting things away before I left for my trip. I purchased another extension pole, but the gate still didn’t fit properly in the 40” hallway. The adjuster bolts are too short, providing minimal support to the gate. The problem is that the adjuster bolts are short for no reason. They can only extend a certain amount of space until you reach the end of the adjuster bolt. I extended each adjuster bolt as far out as I could to bridge the 40" gap. To facilitate bridging the 40" gap, the gate is in the middle of my hallway with each adjuster bolt being barely in the gate on both sides. Furthermore, the company does not account for the size of your pet. My cat is slim, and she fit through the poles on the side that had only 2 poles. If I purchase yet another extension pole, the total price spent would be $446, yet it’s barely secured and held together with duct tape. I had to “fix” the gate by bridging the gap in each extender pole with aluminum foil because additional extension poles are no longer for sale on amazon. I am incredibly upset and frustrated with this purchase. I only wish I could return it, but that seems extremely difficult as I no longer have the box. 07/31/2025 UPDATE: When it came time for me to move, this thing was a nightmare. I ended up giving it away to one of the hired movers for free. At this point, two of rods had completely broken from the bottom and there was no way it would fit in the Uhaul.

A very nice cat gate
First of all I couldn't be more satisfied with this product. The gate must be assembled, but I found the instructions pretty clear. As a side note: I am fairly handy person and an avid DYIer. The gate came double boxed. The outer box was pretty beaten up but the gate was fine. The gate is made of powder coated steel and is sturdy without be excessively heavy. All but two of fastners went into pre-drilled and tapped holes. The two non-tapped faster were self-tapping screws for the latch plate and not at all difficult to install. The holes all lined up, so the screws were easy to install. I fit the gate into a 30" wide interior door way and had no issues. The gate door works well and works well. In my opinion, the product is worth the price.

WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE...WORKS GREAT!
I have been looking for a tall doorway gate ever since my cat count has gotten into the double digits. LIke very multicat household I have cats that don't get along. Over time this has developed into two "clicks" in the house. The cat room crowd and the downstairs group. The cat room has almost always been closed off from the rest of the house. As a result it gets really warm/cold depending on the season because the theromstat is in the hall and not the room. Having the gate allow the air to circulate more normally and the clicks are finally able to interact without a "rumble" in the house. I have escape artists and so far they have not figured out how to get over it. I am still able to open and close the bedroom door without much trouble. The gate took me 2 hours by myself to assemble. Directions are pretty clear and it is heavy duty. My door jams were not deep enough to allow the rubber bumpers to be horizontal so I installed them vertically. Thus far there is no slippage and I did have a cat try to push out of the room immediately upon seeing the gate. Eddie is currently trying to figure out how to undo the nuts on the extensions to get out. Worth the money spent as it allows airflow and more interaction. I highly recommend this.
