Brilliant novel that has it all
In the aftermath of a devastating bomb blast, we follow the lives of two residents of Lahore: Ali, who is desperately attempting to provide for his family, and Mona, who, though well-off, is locked in a humiliating and loveless marriage to the brutish Bilal. Meeting an old friend reminds her of the youthful promise she has left behind, and also some things she would rather forget. In rich, vivid prose, the narrative moves seamlessly between scathing satire, tense drama, and laugh-out-loud funny scenes, providing fascinating insight into Pakistani society along the way.I tore through this novel and loved every page of it. I was on the edge of my seat, wondering how things would work out for Ali and Mona, as their lives became increasingly intertwined. A brilliant debut by a very talented writer, and one of my top reads of the year. Looking very much forward to more from Awais Khan.

A PAGE TURNER!
In the company of strangers by Awais Khan is definitely one of the best debut novels that I've read. His writing is modern and compelling with an elaborate usage of idioms and phrases. The multi-layered characters seem very real and one easily resonates with them, stepping into their shoes. He has also touched a few bold and sensitive topics like terrorism, domestic violence, extra marital affairs which are normally swept under the carpet. These need to be talked about. The research on each character is immaculate and they speak for themselves. It's a story of modern love, real life struggles, manipulation, gaslighting in a world of traditions where everything is expected to be under wraps. This is one of those rare novels that is a 'page turner' in the real sense.

Enchanted
Awais meshes the agonies and plights of our modern times beautifully throughout the story. Mona, Ali, Bilal, Meera are all brilliantly sketched out and one feels their pain and miseries as the story begins to tie up together. The pathos and ironies of life is displayed in a very subtle but prominent manner. What it also does is depicts the horrors of terrorism and how people are lured towards it.Enthralling, moving and an absolute piece of gem. Awais Khan's 'In The Company of Strangers' hits all the right chords.

A glimpse into another world
From the unforgettable Prologue onwards, I found myself drawn by Awais Khan's wonderful way with words and keen eye for detail into the contradictory worlds of Lahore: its underbelly and its high society. The human stories resonated on so many levels as I read, but it's the details of life in Pakistan today that still haunt me. Khan's gift is leading you quietly, showing you this world as if discreetly lifting a curtain for you to peer around.
