This unit works well, out cat is entertained.

How to start it?- It moves but there is no laser beam.

At the top of the laser beam, there is a button. I don't really know what the different colors mean, but if you push the button 1 2 3 times, different colors will pop up. Make sure your laser is charged. I push the button down a lot because my cat loves this toy. The laser goes off after 15 minutes, and starts up again after 2 hours, I believe. But I start it back up when it goes off. If this doesn't work, the laser beam is defective. Return it and have it replaced. (The light should be moving all around the room).

Is there a monthly subscription for this?

No. There is nothing about this that requires a subscription. It is simply a laser chaser. Just like a hand held laser pointer, this is just automatic.

Mine just goes off every two hours, no motion activation.

Mine did that too. Right up until the laser stopped working altogether.
