I used for a college class and I did found it very good.

" Nearly everything we do has some undesirable side effect or at least the risk of some evil." (P.62)" Because most people realize that it is impossible to avoid all evil, ethicists have devised various general rules to help people to decide what evils can be tolerated." (p. 64)The definition of the word evil is " profoundly immoral" with the provided synonyms: wickedness, depravity, sinful, vile,....What is up with the word "evil" in this textbook? I am offended by the misuse of it and feel it has no place in the context of discussing the delivery of healthcare services. How about the use of the word "harm" instead?A woman makes the choice to receive chemotherapy for breast cancer. There are possible side effects of this agent; to describe them as evil is ridiculous. I am starting an IV so a patient can receive antibiotics for an infection. I explain to the patient the benefits and risks. If the patient did experience pain when I inserted the IV that can't be intelligently argued as "evil." Worst case scenario, the patient develops an infection at the insertion site or the IV infiltrates; that is unintentional harm, but not profoundly immoral, wicked, or vile.The authors state that there are those in health care that believe in magic. Come on, really. No health care professional believes in magic, miracles maybe but not magic.The book is biased and is not written by someone who is a health care provider. The case studies are unrealistic and the questions are ridiculous.

I rented this book through Amazon's textbook rental service.Book is well organized and covers a good deal in a compact size. Authors have an excellent writing style which made otherwise incredibly dull material relevant and interesting.Book is six years old and the rental I received was basically in tatters from who knows how many previous renters. Had to be extra careful lest I incur any charges from additional damage.
