One of the best books I’ve read on narcissism

Upon signing on to leave a review, I was caught off guard by the negative reviews I saw listed for this book. I read it in just a few days, and found the author overall to be have gotten the “script” of the narcissist in relationships down pretty well. He does so in a layman’s perspective, and myself being both a mental health professional and a person previously victimized by a narcissist, I found this book offered recognition of my pain. The author also painted a good outline of the patterns relationships with narcissists typically take. There were a few typos, so that complaint I can agree with, but otherwise the book accomplished it’s purpose. Yes, there are more technical books out there for learning about NPD, but this book presents it in a way where the reader can recognize step-by-step signs of a narcissist and emotional abuse. Would recommend.

It was mostly imaginary story-lines about people encountering, having a relationship or working with a narc, interspersed with ways to deal with it. Absolutely no doubt the author has had experience with this because so many things I could relate to and definitely experienced the same. As I read the book I felt bad for the author, I know his pain!!! My only negative thought regarding the book were explain and talk about no contact more thoroughly. It was definitely brought up in the book, but being a victim of a narcissist is a slippery slope. Easy to get sucked back in as explained in the book, but even more NO CONTACT messages would be good. And how so very hard that is to do as a victim.

I bought this book because I was beginning to think that I was going crazy with this person that I was in a 12 year relationship with. I initially started to do my research on narcissism on the Internet and realized that The traits of NPD we are very much a part of the person that I was in a relationship with. I read this book through and it was scary and uncanny how this book detailed the experiences that I went through in this relationship. However, I did not want to accept that this person that I love so much is a narcissist. I wanted to believe that I was special and that we were soulmates. So I kept this book underneath a number of other books on my coffee table and continued to reference it time and time again. It took me six months of reading and referring back to this book when I would experience the gaslighting and the cheating and the lying and everything else that goes along with being in a relationship with a narcissist. I did not want to accept that the person that I love is a narcissist. And these 15 to 20 painful situations that I would find myself in were not just a one off situation. I finally came to realize with the help of this book and referencing back to it, that if I stay in this relationship the number of experiences that confirm that this person is a narcissist, the number will only increase the longer I stay in this relationship. I did not want to believe it and I did not want to accept it. The price I paid for dating a narcissist is a shattered relationship with my children, a huge pile of debt, endless days and nights of pain and hurt and sorrow. I recommend this book for anybody that is questioning there self-worth or self-esteem and find themself in a relationship where they feel like they are going crazy and that the reality that one feels and the gaslighting that the narcissist partner pushes on you. I wish that I found this book 10 years ago. I only have myself to blame for the choices that I have made.But if I could spare one person the pain and devastation that dating a narcissist will bring, I will feel that I will have at least helped someone in the world.

I enjoyed the down to earth realistic way the author explains how easy it is to get in a relationship with a narcissist by way of the love bombing stage. A person who is a people pleaser can get swept off their feet by the admiration and attention they’re getting. The thing to keep in mind if a relationship progresses quickly and things seem too good to be true, it is. Also, don’t jump in bed with the person too quickly because by doing so you can miss and/or dismiss the red signs you’re getting because you feel this is the individual you’ve been waiting for all of your life. Once the narcissists thinks they have you, they switch the script by replacing the love bombing with devaluation, which is done subtly and the cycle of bad behavior begins with the alienation from family and friends, criticism, controlling attitude, lying, gaslighting and manipulation, etc.With NPD on the rise and if you are an empath and/or people pleaser, I recommend you read this book, it will help you to spot a narcissist as they navigate through the early stages of a relationship and beyond.Although there are better books on the market that explain NBD in more detail, I enjoyed this book because this is how I let a narcissist into my life, they appeared to be kind, and generous resulting in my dismissing the red flags. I ended up marrying the man but when I look back all of the signs detailed in this book was there, including the cheating, lying, financial abuse, etc. the man I thought was my soul mate turned out to be my cell mate, what a horrific experience I will never forget. Good read!!

Great book about how to recognize and avoid narcissists in a non-scientific, easy to read language. Great description of the modus operandi of toxic people in relationships, as friends and in the workplace. Very helpful.

Everyone with HSP or is an empath, must read this book!This is an eye opener a true must have book for anyone in this era!

Awesome book. Must read for those coming out of abusive relationship or situations and will help soothe your abused soul.
