Review: A mixed bag. - I stumbled upon this release on desertcart a while back and had never come across this release in the past so i'm assuming it's fairly recent. It's a 2 disc set with one CD and 1 DVD of material from Franks early career. The CD is of little interest to me as it features songs from his 40's columbia yrs,i really don't like this period of Sinatra's career, as like most, am into the far superior Capitol and Reprise era's of the 50's and 60's. If you do like this period of Sinatra's work then it's fairly reflective of some of the best songs he recorded in that time but a lot of these songs would be re-recorded better in the 50's at Capitol. The DVD is runs for about an hour and comprises clips from various TV shows in the 50's and 60's that Sinatra appeared on including his own TV show of course which a lot of these are culled (Some of this material can be found on CD form on the album called "Classic Duets") The video presentation of the DVD is fairly poor but given the time frame from which these shows were recorded it is not really that surprising. Some clips look better than others but if this had been an official release i'm sure the Sinatra estate would have remastered these to some degree for a more professional presentation. That said,all the clips are watchable and the audio largely clear (in mono) Highlights include the fairly famous medley duet with Elvis of "Love me tender and Witchcraft" complete with a rip roaring Nelson Riddle arrangement! There are 2 songs with Bing Crosby and Dean martin which are nice and a nice version of "Too marvellous for words" which vocally is sung slightly differently from the album version. At such a cheap price it is well worth adding to your Sinatra collection for the DVD alone. A lot of the tv shows he made way back when don't exist anymore so this in some ways is a rare chance to view Frank doing what he does best!
