Will installing one of these units cause the water heater to run more often, in turn raising the gas bill?

you circulate a small amount of water back to you water heater with this unit so like me you are thinking you are reheating or making your water heater run a little more, which you are, however, if you run your water at the faucet for a minute or more to heat it up, you are also bringing in outside water into the water heater which is much colder than the water that is recirculating causing the water heater to run anyway and possibly longer depending on the incoming temp of the water and how many gallons you run to get the water temp to what you need. If water conservation (cost or availability) is an issue (which availability may soon be the overwhelming issue for all of us) then this is the way to go. cost is very minimal. If you use very little water, and your other faucets / showers are close to the heater and heat up within 4 to 6 seconds then I would go with a 2.5 gallon under the faucet water heater, or better (if you can afford it) is an "on demand" heater, either way you have very hot water instantly. I have both the laing circulator pump at work and an under sink water heater at home. Both work great, just depends on your needs. The laing was installed at work to conserve water (trucked in 2 times per month) and because it circulates (85 deg on and 94 deg off) it keeps the water line thawed out and just a little natural gas is WAY cheaper than electricity or the water we truck in. At home, we want very hot water at our faucet (zero loss of water) and our other faucets heat up quickly so no real loss. Love them both. The Laing and the under sink heater (storage unit) will ultimatly cost the same (installation and parts are offset). THe Laing gives 95 degree water (the hot stuff follows pretty quick, the under the counter is instant, but either one makes your life nicer and you no longer have to sit by the faucet. I have since installed both systems for friends after evaluating their needs.

What is the gallon per minute flow rate for Laing LHB08100092

For my installation, the pump shut off at 5 min., and the water temperature was 105ºF. Hours later, after the hot water in the pipes had cooled, it took 2.5 gallons to reach 105ºF. That implied a pump flow rate of nominally 0.5 gpm.

Is the cold intake supposed to connect directly to the compartment with the impeller? The pump I received only had the shunt to the cold faucet.

When you are looking straight at the pump with the timer on the front. The lower right hook up is for the intake of cold water. The upper right is the one that goes to the bottom of the faucet. There is a bypass in the pump when it circulates to bring it up to temperature.

how can I get the temp higher than 91f. its on a switched outlet. can I disable the shutoff thermostat so it runs hot water until I shut it off.

Regardless of incoming water temp, the thermostat will shut off the pump at the predetermined temp. So raising the water heater temp won't have any effect.
