SportDOG Orange Check Cord - High-Visibility Floating Check Cord - Lightweight Tangle-Free Long Dog Training Lead with Heavy-Duty Brass Snap

I have an 18 months old Labrador Retriever and I live downtown so until now I have rarely had the opportunity to actually let my dog run free and had to keep him close so he won't jump on people or mouth whatever he found on the ground. I got this check cord because I've tried to let him free a number of times and he totally forgets about me or about the training that he got so far and I wanted something that allowed me to keep him in control should the need arise but still allow him to be a dog and run around. I previously had a long nylon rope that was about 15 feet long. It was too short, it was thin so it tangled easily and I got rope burns pretty much the second time I used it. This check cord is the right length as my dog doesn't really want to go beyond 30 feet away from me and the rope is thick enough so you can easily handle it even if you forgot to put your gloves on -- which are still recommended. I initially was worried because of the size of the clip. For a Lab, it seems a bit flimsy and I was worried that he might break it. He did run once away and I had to stop him and the clip seems durable enough however I learned that the point of using a check cord is to actually just stop the dog from doing things that he likes but you don't really enjoy (running and jumping on other folks, running after some dogs, eating some poop) but during the rest of the time your dog should just drag it around. A smaller clip makes the overall footprint a bit smaller and your dog will forget he has a lead sooner, so I'd say that's actually an advantage. Other than that, there's nothing more that I can say. I can safely let my dog run around, it also helps me with his training in new places and I'm not worried any longer that he might run away for some reason.

A good product. The rope does not tangle easily and is easy to form into a loop for rolling . The brass clip is well made. It is strong and heavy and was the primary reason I purchased this rope lead. I had read other product reviews in which the clip was weak, easily broke, and even cut hands. This is a good durable product which I expect to last a long time. The bright orange color makes it easy to see and the rope handles well.

Purchased the SportDOG Orange Check Cord to bring my dog swimming. Rope floats well and the almost Hi-Viz orange color makes it easy enough to see to make sure your dog doesn't get tangled in it while swimming. Good width, good length, dries quickly and has a strong brass clip. The description states it is a small clip (and I almost didn't purchase it because of that), but it's pretty much a standard size. My dog wears a double D-link harness and the clip attached through both links easily. The other end of the rope does not have a loop but the rope is not so stiff that you can't easily make one. I have not used this for leash walking or field training, only swimming, so I can't attest to it's durability under those circumstances though I believe it would hold up well.

Great for training but the snap won't take a tied dog. I tied my Lab briefly with it and he lunged against it and snapped the bolt. Now, it's not meant as a tie out. But folks may do as I did and use it temporarily to tie a dog. I've replaced the broken snap swivel with a carbiner snap so not an overly large issue. But unnecessary if they'd use stronger hardware. Wouldn't want the hardware much larger for swimming and upland work, however, so this may be a tradeoff.

Bought this 4 months ago for my new pup, works great! I use it when we go on hikes or in wooded parks where I want to keep her on leash, but give her more room to roam. No tears, frays, or breaks at all, doesn't get all tangled, and coils up nicely. It gets dirty pretty quick, so doesn't stay bright orange for long - but most of the dirt washes out with a quick hose down. Definitely use it with a harness and not a neck collar.

I like to take my dog paddle boarding with me, but she likes to jump in and swim and gets distracted by ducks and other people. Great for water holes that you don't have all to yourself. It is very nice to have a floating 30' leash to keep her contained but still have enough freedom to play. The floating rope helps it not get tangled in the feet keeping my dog safe. Also great for playing fetch in the water from the shore. Again, giving me the ability to keep her from getting distracted and swimming off and bothering other people. My goldendoodle is very social and loves the water. Great product.

Used this for training our young lab. It worked very well and has held up great. The length of this is perfect for training the puppy while giving you some control. Please be confident in your purchase of this.

Using for taking our dog to the beach. Positives: Its light especially when wet, it floats and doesn't sink or bog down with water, its a bright color to be able to see it even from far away, it doesn't tangle Negatives: the latch gets nearly impossible to use when sand gets in there from the beach which stinks, there is no handle to hold on to and when it runs through your hand with any sort of speed (lets say a dog pulling) it will give you some nasty hand burns. I would say my fixes will be to probably use a Caribbeaner to attach to the dog to avoid the sand issues in the latch and also wear gloves while handling the rope

We love this dog lead however we bought to allow our dog some freedom at the local beach while at the same time keeping her on lead. The lead itself is great because it floats, it’s bright orange so very visible, and never tangles. The connection however does not hold up to sand/beaches. It gets a couple grains in there and won’t open. So you have to wrestle with it and try to wash the sand out, or fiddle around with it until it opens again. That’s the only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars. Other than that, good lead.

Nice long rope to use when i take my pup swimming at the river . Wish it had a loop at the end but i just tied it. Nice and strong, great purchase and dries quickly
