Holes don't line up for vertical carry. **Q: Is good for ranch work** A: The drop point blade & the curve is designed for maximum pressure that's applied to the cutting surface in the slash or thrusting then cutting through. Essentially this is a tactical self defense tool & the cryogenicaly hardened blade blank is remarkably thick & beefy. Quite simply, this blade would work well for just about any task but I would hate to see it relegated to nothing more than a rusty multipurpose farm tool. It's designed for survival and self-defense. It's a good blade even though it's California based co. has outsourced the manufacturing overseas. Also check out the one w/the tanto blade point which I think is a little larger w/a longer grip tang. The only thing about the drop point is the grip/tang is a bit short & I have big mitts. **Q: Can this knife be used as a boot knife** A: Not sure how comfortable it would be, but yes it could. It is a pretty small knife and is much too small for my hands. **Q: would you eat a steak with this?** A: I guess you can. Add note that I would probably buy a second which I did. This time, the OLF-1009 Now to the rating. The blade is 5 finger in length. Likewise, the handle is also 5 finger and length. Makes it the perfect field Knife Big enough to get the job done. Not big enough to injure the operator. Blade thickness is just about perfect. Giving it enough backbone to get the toughest job done. It's a little heavier on the heavy side, which is indicative of quality knife steel. Out of the box, it's razor-sharp, be careful. A heavier knife tends to be easier to use. As for the handle, it is a very nice size. Fits my average male hand well. As for the sheath, The kydex design as pros and cons. It can flip from horizontal to vertical. And in the vertical it carries high. My personal feelings is at this knife would be better served with a good quality leather Thumbbreak sheath ( Designed for a tactical belt clip) As the Kydex sheath, Is tough to remove and is inherently noisy.
