Perfect for a generator
Works as expected, and extremely affordable compared to alternatives at the big box stores. Used it for a "suicide plug" for my generator to back-feed my house during a power outage. This is a locking style plug so you need to match it with the correct receptacle. It's of good quality, and setup is easy if you have basic electrical knowledge.

Works great for my generator/welder needs
This is a heavy duty nicely made L14-30 male plug that is designed to handle 30 amps at 240v. Each of the wires slide into an individual tube when you assemble the unit, to keep possible stay wire pieces from arcing. There's also a screw down stress relief section that tightens down on the cord to keep the cord from tugging at the connections if you were to pull on it. Each of the tubes where you insert the wires are clearly marked with W,G,X,Y for the 4 wires used. This plug is well made and doing the job nicely. I firmly tighten down the #10 wire (which needs to be used to support the 30 possible amps). It's designed to hold this size wire. I feed mine with a 10-4 flex cable, feels like an extension cord but much thicker and pretty pricey. I primarily use this to supply power to my welder. The welder sits on a cart that I built with a power distribution center on it. I run a cord from the cart over to the wall where I have an L14-30 female to plug this into. It works well and I really like the locking connection, it keeps things plugged in if there's a little tension on the cords. This link takes you to the plug I used which is also well made and they work great together. Leviton 2710 30 Amp, 125/250 Volt, Flush Mounting Locking Receptacle, Industrial Grade, Grounding, V-0-MAX, Black Both of these pieces are available here on Amazon at a significant discount over the local big box stores. 5 stars, a well-made lasting design for a great price.

Good solid plug for a great price
This fits the twist-lock 240-volt outlet on many generators, and costs a fraction of what the helpful hardware place charges. Works with flat submersible well pump cable, and also round SO cord. Terminal screws are solid and make a good connection. If you're not sure how to wire it, leave it to someone who is.

Does the Job
The first thing I want to warn the reader about is that many of the other devices on Amazon claim to be NEMA 14-30P or L14-30P, but are not. I saw several that were L15-30P, but described incorrectly. These are definitely L14-30P as stated in the description. See my other reviews if you're looking for the corresponding L14-30R. The P means "plug," and the R means "receptacle;" they must match. The L means "locking," and also must match. This is for a split phase 110-220V circuit that most US households use. You require four wires for this: two phase (power; red and black normally), one neutral (return for each phase when running 110V; white), and one ground (safety; usually bare wire or green insulation). The phase wires go on the gold screws. The neutral goes on the silver screw. The ground wire goes on the green screw. Typical dryers use 120 (single phase) for the controls and split phase (two phases) for the motor and heaters. I wasn't thrilled with the stress relief on this plug. I added an additional bushing, because this is for personal use. The screws and connection points are good quality. The layout of the connection points along with the separators between them made the wiring very easy. The sleeve is long enough to accommodate the 10 awg cable you will need to use for this device. I took away one star for the stress relief design. There is a noticeable gap once you tighten it down. You could never get a finger into the gap, but it was too large for my liking. I just threw in a bushing I had lying around, and now there is no longer a gap. I took away one star for this, but since this is really a personal choice, perhaps it should have only been a half-star deduction. Alas, Amazon does not have half-star capability. In any case, if you need an L14-30P, this is a good choice.

Leviton NEMA L14 is Not a Water-Proof Rating
W A R N I N G : The Leviton 30 Amp NEMA L14-30 (P) locking plug is NOT water proof, rain-resistant, damp environment-proof or any of any consideration for being in or near any type of moisture. You need something waterproof you better be a Qualified Person or better, or you need to speak with a Qualified Person before exposing yourself to Danger. Leviton Electrical Hardware and Products are the very top of the heap, don't get me wrong. But not knowing the Class of Service can Get You Killed. And, you will suffer enormous pain while waiting to die while being electrocuted!

Strong, high quality plug
I used a couple of these L14-30P plugs with 10/4 SOW cable. They were easy to install and made a secure connection to the conductors and the cable jacket. On my first try I cut back the cable insulation too much, and there was enough excess, insulated wires remaining that I couldn't jam the cable jacket in far enough to fully capture it in the clamp. It took about 2 minutes to correct that and finish the job. One thing that was much better about this plug than some less expensive ones was the more secure fit of the plug section with the back shell. It only required a couple of turns with two screws, as opposed multiple turns on three stiff screws. Also, the shell did not distort at all while tightening. As far as the blades, these seem to be stiffer than the ones on the cheap plugs. The cheaper plugs give the impression that the blades could be easily bent, but not these. For me, the extra $5 that these cost was worth it.
