This book works on three separate levels. One for the buyer, one for dad, and one for the son.First the buyer gets to confront the issue that we need more organization and understanding on how things work and how to get along in society. This book says you need to know certain things in life to succeed. With little quotes and small anecdotes it illustrates, in an interesting and entertaining way, the different types of social skills needed for different types of situations. However, it also preaches a certain way of living that is engaged with the world and active, as opposed to becoming a passive self-absorbed individual which it warns against.Second the dad gets to do something. Any father will tell you, and a good father I think will, always try to be involved and this book can give a first step in that direction for would be fathers, nervous fathers, old fathers, any father. The title of Rules for my Unborn Son makes this a book as much for the dads as the sons. The book offers a tangible reminder to fathers on what they are going to have to teach and pass down to their sons.Third the son gets some help. I guarantee if you put this on any child's shelf at some point they will take it down and take it to heart. Clearly you can't rely on a book to raise your child, but it can be one helpful and tangible reminder of things you have tried to teach them.This book works off the principle of nostalgia. That we have lost something. Just look at the yellow cloth cover with the 50s style print and picture, and the same design is on the inside. However, I think it says something far more subtle. Namely that we can learn from the past. That is what being a father is all about. A father uses his past experiences to help someone as much as he can. I think this is a good buy for a father, or son, or both.

Love this book. Many years I had an eye on it and finally I have the hardcopy. At the introduction the author comment about "general speech" for freedom and he argues the rules are also good, not totally bad. One need to have in account that it was published first time in 2009, right away after the 2008 crisis. Probable reason why people claimed for freedom and the author was bringing some arguments of reasonably. After all, it is called "Rules..." but the author gives, actually, advices. Really nice book!

This book was a quick read there are ~200 pages in the book, with an average of 2 quotes and\or short pieces of advice per page.Ironically, some of the quotes are things that I find myself saying variations of on a daily basis to coworkers, friends and family.I bought this book to give to my son when he is a bit older (he is currently 2), but I think all the advice in the book is solid and will help boys grow up into something that resembles a gentleman; rather than a boy who can shave.My favorite quotes from the book are:"Short pants are for little boys, decide for yourself when you are a man""Men should not wear sandals. I can't imagine anyone has a dad who could share all that's here (and who among us would actually listen if we did?), but I found myself laughing when I came across rules that reminded me of a bit of shared wisdom from my own father--and realized with a start there's probably a lot more he could teach me--if I'd only bother to listen, or to ask.I bought a copy for my dad and plan on adding quick notes next to the rules he taught me that have really helped me along the way. If you have kids, it would be amazing to hand over a copy of this book with your own notes about the rules you think are the most valuable.There's nothing quite like a father's wisdom--and Walker Lamond has distilled the best of it!

Someone bought this for me when we were expecting our first boy, and I have since bought this book a few times for male friends expecting a son.It is an inexpensive and thoughtful gift for any dad-to-be. Plus most of the one-liner advice is golden: when on a road trip with friends always offer to buy the first tank of gas!

I buy this for anyone having a little boy and include it with other gifts. Such a cute book with the best, classic "rules" that remind you to stay true to yourself and be classy. It's the best addition or gift topper for anyone having a little boy and it gets you excited to raise a little gentleman!

This has made a great bathroom book, providing short bursts of humor and insight without asking very much of its reader.Each page contains one or two "rules" for the author's unborn son, meant to serve as guideposts on the boy's road to manhood. The rules are generally witty and playful, rather than deep or life-changing. Don't buy this as an instruction manual on how to raise a son, but purchase it to start you thinking about parenthood with a healthy serving of laughter along the way.

One of the best men's blogs out there finally becomes a book. 1001 Rules For My Unborn Son is a collection of 1001 rules every boy and modern gentleman should live by. From "When in doubt wear a tie." or "If you are tempted to wear a cowboy hat, resist" to "Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it." 1001 Rules is filled with great advice, beautiful font and timeless black and white pictures. Rules for My Unborn Son contains a selection of posts from Walker Lamond's website of the (almost) same name, presented beautifully in hardback with numerous photographs and illustrations.The concept behind Lamond's website is both inspired and inspiring, a collection of dicta ranging from the practical to the moral to the philosophical, complemented by carefully selected photographs and musical pieces that illustrate his points perfectly. The rest of the Internet could disappear tomorrow and all would be well provided Lamond continues with his postings.His book, however, seems to lack a certain something that makes the website such compulsive reading, at least for a fan who has already pored over the archives multiple times. The problem, I think, stems from the unavoidable limitations imposed by the publishing process in capturing the essence of the site; where the site flows so perfectly with photograph leading to caption leading to song leading to the next nugget of wisdom the book seems a little disjointed, rather less rich and engaging. The book is still great, just not perfect.Despite these unfortunate deficiencies, Rules for My Unborn Son would make a perfect gift for anyone with eyes and the ability to read English, and it would be an ideal introduction to the greater treasures contained within the site itself. I've already bought two copies, and as holidays and birthdays roll around once again I'll continue to buy this book for everyone I know and love until my friends and family stage an intervention.

Know your classics, have a signature dish... a reminder of principles that should be kept around. I bought the book for my son, who just turned 18. His comments: "It's like a big brother and a dad all rolled up into one book. Cool." Need I say more?

Like the phrases so much, first because it's all true, second because they last a lifetime, I certainly will give this book to my child!

Humorous, contagious, with actual life lessons. Lots of wisdom that will make you smile but ponder deeply about your life and future sons.
