Ruthe VPA/GS Hatchet with Hickory Handle, Silver/Beige, 600 g

Very happy with this well made compact camping / Bushcraft axe. Arrived with an even, adequately sharp, edge. 15 minutes with an oil stone and it is now RAZOR sharp. No re-profile required. Just touched up factory edge. Perfect for chopping kindling, finer cutting, feathering etc. Summary: delighted and well impressed with quality and performance for budget price. Now needs a lanyard hole and a nice leather wrist loop.

This is my van ax useful for dismembering things... Like twigs and sticks for the camp fire. Should be noted that it's usable when it arrives but could benefit from a sharpen. Handle is good quality head also seems good.. I can't vouch for how long it will take to cut a tree down but for splitting small firewood it's bang on.. not to heavy not to light.. an nice little chopper

This axe is supplied blunt and you need to sharpen it. The axe is well made, with a longer shaft and a heavier head than a hatchet. It is still small enough for fine work once it is sharpened. So, sharpening... almost any work axe I see sold these days is blunt. The head is an excellent shape though and takes an edge well. A word of warning, it is a decently hard carbon steel, and so sharpening is hard work. Best to start with a bench grinder (use the fine wheel and follow the bevelled cutting edge for the angle. Do not do more than reasonably quick passes along the curve of the blade, or it will heat and lose the temper. Once you have an even decent-ish edge on it, use a sharpening puck in a circular motion to polish to a sharp, smooth edge. It took me about 5 minutes on the grind wheel and then put on a movie and set to with the puck. End result, one beautifully sharp axe. Yes, it takes some effort to get this axe where you want it, however almost everything else is sold blunt, so expect to have to put in a little time and effort.
