I am unaware of your accusation. Label says polyester fiber, all new material, made in China, www.wildrepublic.com. The colors are vibrant, eyes are plastic, and the sound is high quality for the size of the recorder. We love everything about these three birds, including watching the live ones at my bird feeder. Would recommend this product to everyone.

What ‘triggers’ the chirping? Is there a button to push, or are they motion activated?

You squeeze the birds body. There is a button inside.

I assume these run on batteries. Are they replaceable?

Smart question! Yes, they run on those flat, disc shaped batteries. Technically, there isn't a zipper or Velcro flap of anyway to access the battery compartment on the sound box. However, my husband surgically opened our cardinal and seamlessly replaced the battery. The original battery lasted a very long time and our birds get squeezed and played with a lot. Also, I contacted the company about how to replace the battery and they sent me a free replacement cardinal and a bonus hummingbird!
