The AREDS formula, which was published in 2001, resulted in a 25 percent reduction in the progression of AMD in the original AREDS study and this was also shown to be true in the AREDS II study with an even better result. The use of specific dosages of lutein and zeaxanthin in the AREDS areds 2 eye vitamins study showed further reduction of the progression of AMD even better than the first AREDS study, which did not have lutein or zeaxanthin. In the AREDS 2 study the beta carotene (Vitamin A) was found to decrease the absorption and the efficacy of lutein and zeaxanthin. Therefore, Beta carotene should not be used and lutein and zeaxanthin should take its place resulting in an even better reduction of the progression of AMD. The AREDS II study showed that a lower dose of zinc at 25mg was just as efficient as a dose of zinc at 80mg. No stomach upset. This is a very complete AREDS 2 multi-vitamin. I was looking for an AREDS 2 multi-vitamin that would work with the Pure Micronutrients Calcium Supplement which also contains zinc. The trouble with most leading AREDS 2 eye vitamins is that they have a huge amount of zinc. Adding a complete calcium supplement with zinc would provide more zinc than is safe to consume daily. This supplement has enough zinc to be effective without going over the maximum safe dosage of zinc per day.
