Marginal quality **Q: Could this be used to pull a truck out of mud?** A: Really depends upon how bad you are stuck. I would not try it if I was buried up to the hubs in Iowa mud. I have only used it to winch trucks onto a trailer. I would not trust it to winch out a badly stuck truck. It really does not have that much usable length to it. I winched a truck into my shop and it took several times of resetting the winch. **Q: Let's clear this up once and for all ... how long is the cable?** A: Cable length is irrelevant. This is what causes so much confusion. The real question is "How far can this lift/pull an object?". In general to double the lifting weight, you need to add a pulley system that cuts the total lift height in half. So a 12' 1 ton unit may be able to life 10 feet, while the same with 2 ton capacity will likely lift only 5 feet. You also have to realize that you need some cable to remain on the machine itself. But I've used come alongs for years. To address some of the bad comments. A two ton vehicle being pulled from being stuck could need a whole lot more pull than 4 tons. Resistance of ground, gravity, suction from mud etc. When a come along is over worked you should be able to notice it while using it. Rewinding a come along after use is important that it's done under pressure. If you just rachet it up loosely then the next time you use it the cable will get Tangled up. I hook the cable to something and pull on it as I crank it in. Whether it can do 4 tons or not I don't know. It's probably more a rating of the cable than the mechanisms themselves. I can't see this lifting a 2 ton car off the ground. Anyone who claims any come along can, is crazy. But when I see it's overloaded by how it's not spooling correctly I learned the hard way, stop. Move to another angle or use two come alongs and alternate cranking it up between the two. I've ruined a few in my life time and I always see it's not working right. Impatience is what screws it up. Take it off, move it to another spot.
