We got to be a part of it, and we each walked away with a gift certificate for one free pair of shoes at our local Vans Store. (This was when Vans' retail presence was a factory-direct approach where you could buy off the shelf, or they'd order them in, or they'd literally customize a pair on the spot.) That same day, we were standing at the counter, in Mission Viejo, off old La Paz. I do believe my parents were even happy to throw in a few bucks to finally make my dream come true. For the first time, I hit the street with a pair of Vans "Off The Walls" on my feet. Checkered slip-ons, no less! Fast forward 25 years, and I got back into skateboarding, in my mid-30's.
