The Wonders of Nature (DK Children's Anthologies) : Hoare, Ben: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: A breathtakingly beautiful and fascinating book for all ages - I love this book. We got "An Anthology of Intriguing Animals " last year and loved its classy feel and fascinating facts. We were really looking forward to this being released and haven't been disappointed. It is simply stunning - gorgeous artwork, beautifully produced and well made with quality pages that are gold edged. This gives it a very expensive and sophisticated look. It looks great on our coffee table and has been commented on by many visitors. The writing is very engaging - full of fascinating facts and insights presented in bite sized chunks. Although aimed and written for children readers in our house of all ages have enjoyed reading this and dipping in and out of it. I am 43 and have learned so much!! Wonders of Nature is a good title as the subject matter is broad, more so than most other nature books. In addition to plants and animals this book covers rocks and minerals and microscopic life. These would not always be subjects to grab my attention but the writing is excellent and fascinating. Who knew that microscopic water bears are everywhere and are the toughest animals of all - being able to survive being frozen, boiled, show and starved of water?! When I bought further copies in waterstones ( sorry, desertcart) the lady at the till said that this was her favourite book of the year and I can see why. I have stocked up for Christmas presents and for myself and know that I have secured myself a great gift that will be well loved for years Review: Beautiful and Fascinating Book - A really beautiful book with lots of interesting topics. Lovely illustrations and a great way to spark curiosity about the natural world. My 9 year old loves it and asked for more from the same range. Perfect for children who love learning and exploring new ideas.

Beautifully presented, by DK…
…but for me and those around me, the contents are not quite as expected. 📝 '...The storybook descriptions let you discover the myths and legends surrounding both organisms and gemstones, as well as key facts about their natural history. Find out how the prowling jaguar uses spots to avoid being spotted, why a sticky sundew means big trouble for insects, and what on Earth a radiolarian is. This beautiful treasury lets you find the things that interest you and uncover new favourites along the way. With reference pages packed with information you'll go away knowing something you didn't before, and you'll return time and again...' (SPOILER ALERT…those not so keen on our 8-legged friends may need to prepare themselves for the LARGE picture, on page 155 (eek!) …and the ‘BUMBLEBEE’, on page 160, is also a bit of an eye opener!) From the back cover (1st image below refers): 📝 ‘Discover the wonderful world of nature and learn about some of the most amazing rocks and minerals, microscopic life, plants and animals on Earth. From opals to orchids and tapirs to toadstools, this beautiful collection brings more than 100 examples from the natural world to life. Every page reveals fantastic photography and gorgeous illustrations as well as surprising facts and stories you won’t forget.’ The current ‘LOOK INSIDE’ facility above gives a fair idea of the layout including the full CONTENTS list at the front and the handy 2-page GLOSSARY at the back, along with a snatch of the colourful VISUAL GUIDE, i.e. the index of items, in order of appearance, that includes extra key information (last image below refers), just ahead of the page of CREDITS that winds up the weighty tome. ooOoo ※ TITLE : DK ~ THE WONDERS OF NATURE ※ AUTHOR : BEN HOARE ※ ILLUSTRATORS : ANGELA RIZZA & DANIEL LONG ※ 2019 ‘Printed and bound in China’ ooOoo Measuring around 21.5 cm x 27.75 cm x 2.5 cm, this is undoubtedly an impressive looking publication. Along with the vibrant coloured little pictures that decorate the front…enticing the reader in…the purple hardback cover is embellished with shiny gold that includes the writing and follows through to the spine. The pages are edged in gold colouring & a cream coloured ribbon is attached to keep your place in the 224 quality, matte-finish pages. As explained in the short INTRODUCTION on page 2, the book is split into 4 main parts that have a double page spread general introduction: ~ ROCKS AND MINERALS (page 4-31) ~ MICROSCOPIC LIFE (page 32-57) ~ PLANTS (page 58-134) ~ ANIMALS (page 135-213) Each is subdivided into various ‘topics’ over a double page spread that is dominated by a large and colourful main illustration that often spans the spine area. Apart from noting the main location/s, each has an interesting fact in a bolder print, e.g. from CORAL on page 140: 📝 ‘Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is so big you can see it from space.’ The main writing is a paragraph or two in a good-sized font, which is informative but minimal for the best part, IMO. Having said that, it could well fire the enthusiasm for further research, by any age group. This book (and the others) have been on my list for a long time. I was so happy to see it on sale, so I grabbed it and couldn’t be happier. The illustrations are beautiful and it’s filled with information. I can’t wait to get the rest and finish the collection.

The book is good for 10 y kids or younger if he/she has interest in nature. It has tons of knowledge and covers one topic of class 12 that is animal world. As a teacher I can assure u the main problem teaching with 11 and 12 students is their lack of knowledge or knowledge limited to school books, which seriously lack in knowledge and also are out dated… It’s good to develop reading knowledge and have wide knowledge from early age… The book is good and has ton of info…

Beautifully made, my daughter really likes these books. Although I have to say that the selection of what is shown seems a bit chaotic to me. Does not disturb my daughter though ;)
