I'm using a 5.5" box spring with a 12" mattress and it fits perfectly so there's no gap in between the mattress and the headboard. If you don't want a gap either, the measurement between the top of the wood frame slats (that hold the box spring) to the bottom of the headboard is 16" - 17".The instruction manual is a bit confusing if you've never put a bed frame together before. Parts of the instructions seem to assume you already know how to put similar items together, so it threw me off a bit since I wasn't sure what some parts were showing. My husband understood, though, and we put it together in about an hour and a half. After we were done, we sat on the bed and sat back against the headboard, and it knocked into the wall behind us, so we added padding in between the back of the headboard and the wall to keep it from moving back if we rest against it. Not sure if that's normal or if that means it's not sturdy enough.I also had a minor issue with one of the wood pieces being cracked, so I reached out to customer service. They were extremely communicative and took care of the issue very quickly, even communicating during the weekend. They were wonderful.Overall, this frame is gorgeous and still looks new 13 months later.
