AN UNFAIR COMPARISON?
I also own a Thermopen, the gold standard for speed & accuracy. So how does this thermometer measure up?ACCURACY: Accuracy specs are a little more generous than the Thermopen, but in actual use both agreed on the temp.SPEED: One thing I've always hated about cheap thermometers is how slow they are. This one isn't slow. While the Thermopen is a bit faster, it's not a big enough difference to be annoying.PROBE: The 8" length of the probe is REALLY nice! It makes it easy to check temps on big roasts & whole hogs. The shorter probe of the Thermopen is one drawback to its pocketable design.DISPLAY: The Thermopen display is BIG & a backlit version is available (great for all nite smoking marathons!) for even more money. This thermometer has a small display that's especially hard to read in the dark. However, it directly faces you which is wonderful! Sometimes I struggle to orient my Thermopen so I can read its display.I have pet peeve regarding thermometer displays. I hate displays that show the temp to one tenth of a degree! For cooking it's just not necessary & it makes it harder to read. I understand the marketing reason for displaying the temp to a tenth, it makes your thermometer look more accurate. (Although it has nothing to do with real accuracy. You can display an inaccurate temp to the tenth too.) The Thermopen allows you to toggle off the tenth of a degree display with a DIP switch. With this thermometer you're stuck with the tenth of a degree display.FORM FACTOR/EASE OF USE: The Thermopen has a form factor that's hard to beat. The folding design makes it easy to keep in your pocket while cooking or BBQ'ing. Since the probe folds into the handle there is no need for a case. This thermometer has a separate case that is much more awkward to use. It will help protect your thermometer while it's in the drawer, but the idea of pocket clip on this thermometer's case is ridiculous. Who has a pocket 8" long? The case is also very tight & it's hard to insert the thermometer. There's no possible way you could insert it into the case if the case was clipped to your pocket. So it's going on the counter -- which is a problem as this thermometer will roll, even when it's in the case. You really need to think when you set it down or it will be on the floor or in the grass in a heartbeat. Finally, the buttons are small & hard to push when you've got greasy hands. The Thermopen has no buttons to push, you just unfold it to turn it on. Simple. Intuitive. Perfection.VALUE: A Thermopen goes for $96 ($112 for the backlit version) This is $18. Whoo Hoo that's a win! While it's no Thermopen, it's still relatively fast & very accurate. There are some tradeoffs for that $80 savings, but it's hard to beat for value unless you're a professional chef who needs a thermometer in your pocket all day long.

disappointed at first
I was so excited when I got my thermometer since I am very new to canning and really want to make sure everything stays safe for my family. When I first turned on my thermometer it did not come on. I was very disappointed. My husband suggested that I check to make sure the battery was in it before I returned it so I checked and yes there was a battery. I was getting on my amazon account to start procedure to returning it but my husband thought maybe there was a thing under the battery to protect it during shipping. He did not find anything but when he took the battery out and put it back in the thermometer started working. The temp seems to be right on it ,so hopefully it was just a loose connection and it will continually working great.

Seems to do the job fine...
It seems to do it's job fine. The face seems a wee bit on the cheap side, and the on/off button is a challenge to activate at times. It's really small, in the middle between two other buttons, and pushes hard. But as far as reading the temperature, it seems spot on. I didn't spend a lot on it, so for the price, I give it 4 stars.Update: Over a year later and this is still working great. There was a clear coating on the thermometer when it came that was meant to be peeled off. Didn't realize it at first--once I took that off the buttons were a lot easier to press. Happy with my purchase.

Works Great. Best Value For the Money!
The media could not be loaded. This thing works great! I've used it 3 or 4 times already. Twice for steaks on the grill. Once for a brisket (always a struggle here to get them right). Once for a beer brewing episode. Worked flawlessly each time. At first I was worried about how slow it seemed to take; however, upon closer inspection, it was just the tenths of a degree numbers that was moving around. No one needs that kind of accuracy when cooking (even if it was that accurate), so after just ignoring those decimals, it really responds rather quickly. It does, you know, take a few seconds for heat to travel through the metal probe and onto the sensor. This would be true for any contact (non-infrared) thermometer. That attached meat chart on a string is more convenient that I thought it would be. Unless you have all the temperatures memorized (yeah, right!), one would have to run to the computer to look them up. GREAT FEATURE!So I decided to test it's water resistance ability. That's what the video is showing. I know you aren't supposed to submerse this thing in water, but hey, it's a test and my curiosity got the best of me.Well, it passed. No problems at all. I still don't think that I'm going to throw it into the sink or dishwasher in the future. The E-books aren't near as handy as if they were real books to place on a counter, but I understand that it would be cost prohibitive to give "real" books away. They're good regardless.Everything as advertised.

One thing I don't like is that this is NOT an instant read thermometer
One thing I don't like is that this is NOT an instant read thermometer. It can take 10-20 seconds for this to register a stable temperature. If you're checking the temperature of something in the oven, you may not want to leave your oven door open for that long, and you certainly don't want to keep your hand in the hot oven while you're waiting for this thing to count up to the correct temperature.I LOVE the long probe, however. Great. The case/cap for the probe is good. The buttons on the display are flimsy though. I appreciate the ability to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit. THe plastic where the display is could be harder/better quality.
