    End the confusion

The hardcover is the novel and the softcover is the manga! Have both and love them!

    Overall a good read.

I bought the book after watching the anime. While the story is overall the same. The anime made certain additions that made the story way more interesting. This doesn't take any merit from the book, which is actually a pretty good story with quite a few surprises for those who haven't watched the animation, but it might be one of those rare occurrences in which the adaptation turns out to be better than the source material, at least for me.Going back to the book. The dark atmosphere is properly developed and the story is intriguing. I would think of it more along the lines of a dark mystery novel with some supernatural elements and not of a horror story per se. Koichi, the protagonist, provides a good insight of how the entire situation unfolds through the course of the book, but with the exception of a few scenes here and there, he seems to be a little too detached from the situation. The character development in the book is not particularly the best either, I would say that with the exception of Koichi, and perhaps Mei, it is lacking for the rest of the cast, yet it still makes sense given that everything is seen through Koichi's eyes, and Mei is the person that interacts the most with him.

    Couldn't stop reading

When I started reading this book I couldn't stop. I bought the Vol. 2 on the spot, because I just wanted to read them both as if it was just one long book.As a person who has read the manga and seen the anime (I've never got to see the live action movie) I can point out several things. This first volumen mostly introduce the characters, which are less than in the other two, you don't need that many main character to write a book, but to illustrate the story and keep it interesting you need more people, more drama, more characters to love and hate, and so on. In a book you can express much more with much less. The pace is good and, although is a mystery-horror novel, it's a pretty light Reading, meaning you won't have to take a break from all the tension it creates or anything. It's also well narrated. The only thing I have to say about it, that it's not enough to give this book 4 stars for me, is that it makes reference to events that happened in Japan, such as Sakakibara last name being the same name used by a killer in Japan who was active in 1997, a year before this story takes place. As it is a famous case in there, they do not explain this because the audience probably rembers the incident, as it is a japanese novel.I recommend this book if you like this kind of story, even if you read the manga and/or saw the anime, it's worth it.
